The Boone boys’ tennis team’s postseason run came to a close Tuesday, June 2, as the Toreadors faced a tough draw against second-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier in the Class 1A state quarterfinals.
Boone, seeded seventh, fell 5–0, to a Xavier squad on the courts in Pella.
In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Strummer Grout and Calvin Jordan fell, 2–6, 2–6.
The No. 2 team of Braxtan Sproule and Patrick Houser also dropped their match, 0–6, 2–6.
Boone’s closest contest came at No. 3 doubles, where Brandon Holm and Sam Chesnut pushed their Xavier opponents to a third-set tiebreak.
After splitting the first two sets, the Toreador duo narrowly lost the third set tiebreaker, 7–10.
In singles, Grout fell 0–6, 0–6 at No. 2.
Meanwhile, at No. 3, Jordan dropped his match 0–6, 0–6.
No. 6 singles player Logan Wickman provided one of Boone’s more competitive moments.
Wickman led early and was ahead 6–4 before the match was left unfinished as the team result was decided.
Three other singles competitors did not play as Xavier clinched the dual.
While the loss ended Boone’s tournament run, the team had another successful season.
Earlier in the postseason journey, the doubles team of Grout and Jordan also represented Boone at the state individual tournament, Wednesday May 27, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
Grout and Jordan lost to a team from Central DeWitt in straight sets before losing to a team from Dubuque Wahlert in third set tiebreaker.

The Toreadors finished the season with a 14–5 record and won the Pella Dutch Invite in April, navigating a schedule that included injuries and illness throughout the lineup.
The program is set to return eight of its top 10 players and 10 of its top 12 next season, and the team will also bring back 10 letter winners, the largest returning group in recent years.
