Boone County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public About Altered and Missing Traffic Signs

KWBG 11/19/21

BOONE, Iowa—The motoring public in Boone County is being cautioned by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department about traffic signs that may be missing or altered. The Department issued at statement on their Facebook page:

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to stay vigilant by paying extra attention to traffic signs and report any suspicious activity. Recently the Boone County Roads Department have made complaints that there has been tampering with stop signs and road signs in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to cause a vehicle accident to occur.
At an intersection on Quill Rd, south of Boone, a stop sign was removed and replaced with a different yellow sign. Other signs leading up to this same intersection were also removed/altered.
At the intersection of Hwy 17 and CR E26 (back way from North Boone to North Ames) a stop sign was removed.
The removal and alteration of the road signs and stop signs could certainly cause a vehicle accident, especially for those not familiar with the area or intersection. This could also have an effect of indiscriminately injuring or killing anybody that falls victim to an altered traffic sign.
A message to those responsible:
If you are caught removing or altering traffic road signs YOU will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law AND you will also become financially responsible for all necessary repairs. IN ADDITION, should your criminal act cause an accident, injury, or death, you will be charged accordingly.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding anybody that is involved in this theft or rearranging of traffic signs. If you have information please contact the Boone County Communications Center at 515-433-0527 and refer to case number 202112013. If you should notice any suspicious activity or altered road signs, please call 911 and immediately report it.
