Boone CSD Board of Education Releases Statement on District’s Budget Reductions

KWBG 01/07/26

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone Community School District Board of Education has issued the following statement today:

The Board of Education would like to address questions and concerns regarding the district’s budget and the difficult conversations that are taking place as part of this process.

We recognize that budget reductions are upsetting, particularly when they involve potential staffing changes or programs that are deeply valued by our students, families, and staff. At this time, no final decisions have been made. However, we want to be transparent that reductions will be necessary as we work to stabilize our district’s finances and plan responsibly for the future.

The Board understands the strong emotions surrounding these discussions. All programs play an important role in student learning, creativity, and connection to school. Please know that these matters are being approached with great care, thoughtful consideration, and a commitment to students.

We invite families, staff, and community members to attend the Board meeting on Monday, January 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Boone High School in the auditorium. This meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about our district’s financial situation and to share feedback with the Board. We encourage respectful discourse at the meeting and throughout our community.

Unfortunately, in recent days, there have been instances of personal attacks that do not reflect who we are as a school community. These actions are hurtful and do nothing to advance our Core Values of Collaboration, Compassion, Enthusiasm, Growth Mindset, and Integrity.

We also believe it is important for our community to understand the broader context behind these budget challenges. Like many school districts across Iowa, Boone CSD is facing significant financial pressure due largely to the continued underfunding of public education by the state legislature. State Supplemental Aid has not kept pace with rising costs for many years, while expenses related to staffing, operations, and student needs continue to grow. As a result, our district must take a proactive approach to address these challenges and eliminate deficit spending.

We know this is a challenging time, and we appreciate the professionalism, care, and commitment our families and staff demonstrate. The Board remains committed to open communication, respectful dialogue, and responsible decision making as we work together to support our students and the future of our schools.
