
Boone freshman Maiya Phanchantraurai is two wins away from a state singles championship and seniors Kaylee Kuehl and Livi Schneider are hoping to duplicate their fifth-place finish from last year at the Class 1A State Individual Tennis Tournament at Waukee Northwest High School.
Phanchantraurai dropped just two games Wednesday, October 7, on her way to the state semifinals.
She opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ella Seney of Grinnell.
Phanchantraurai followed in the quarterfinals, defeating Natalie Steele of Fairfield, 6-1, 6-1.
Phanchantraurai will face Grace Huinker of Decorah in the semifinals at 10 a.m. this morning.
By reaching the semifinals, the Boone freshman is guaranteed to finish between first and fourth place in Class 1A singles.
Boone also remains in contention for a top-five finish in doubles with seniors Kaylee Kuehl and Livi Schneider.
Kuehl and Schneider began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Macey O’Brien and Samantha Wood of Waterloo Columbus Catholic.
Their championship run ended in a hard-fought three-set quarterfinal match against Charley Diulio and Lea Patrick of Davenport Assumption.
Kuehl and Schneider won the opening set in a tiebreaker, but the Assumption duo rallied to take the next two sets and the match, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The Boone seniors bounced back in the consolation bracket, defeating Nisha Koneru and Claire Mier of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, 6-3, 6-2.
Kuehl and Schneider will play Payton Foster and Lauren Muller of Dike-New Hartford at 9:30 a.m. this morning.
The Boone duo will finish between fifth and eighth place.
