The Boone girls’ swim team secured state qualifications in all three relay events and celebrated a total of seven individual swimmers advancing at the regional meet held Saturday, November 8 at Johnston High School .
“This was such a great day of performances from our girls,” said head coach Chris Mann.
Three relays, three individual events head to state
All of Boone’s relay teams advanced to the state meet.
“After a couple of years of only qualifying one relay, it will be awesome to have all three relays and seven total swimmers competing in Iowa City next week,” Mann said.
The 200 Medley Relay (21st seed) of Avery Howie, Harper Houston, Claire Enabnit, and Quinn Houston combined for a strong swim.
The 200 Free Relay (30th seed) of Sara Gute, Quinn Houston, Finley Houser, and Makenzie Klatt also qualified.
The 400 Free Relay (23rd seed) of Quinn Houston, Howie, Houser, and Klatt closed the meet with a great effort.
Howie led the charge, qualifying in two individual events: the 50 Free (20th seed) and 100 Backstroke (21st seed).
“Avery Howie led the way as she always does, but the underclassmen that she has taken under her wing this year really had a day,” Mann said.
Klatt made history by qualifying in the 100 Backstroke (32nd seed), becoming the first Boone freshman to swim an individual event at state.
“Makenzie had a very exciting swim dropping 3.5 seconds in her 100 back to snag the final qualifying spot. She is the first Boone freshman (to my knowledge) to swim an individual event at the state meet,” Mann said.
Regional meet results
Boone’s swimmers posted impressive times across the board Saturday at Johnston, with 31 out of 36 swims being lifetime bests.
Notable individual performances included:
- 50 Free: Avery Howie (3rd, 25.08), Sara Gute (12th), Tessa Gute (14th)
- 100 Free: Quinn Houston (10th), Sara Gute (11th), Tessa Gute (16th)
- 200 Free: Finley Houser (8th), Lucille Enabnit (12th), Savannah Witte (14th)
- 500 Free: Morgan Cox (10th), Lucille Enabnit (13th), Savannah Witte (14th)
- 200 IM: Claire Enabnit (6th), Makenzie Klatt (7th), Harper Houston (11th)
- 100 Fly: Claire Enabnit (6th), Finley Houser (10th), Ashlyn Burkhart (14th)
- 100 Back: Avery Howie (3rd), Makenzie Klatt (6th), Ashlyn Burkhart (15th)
- 100 Breast: Harper Houston (7th), Morgan Cox (18th), Lillian Wright (19th)
Relay Results at Regionals
- 200 Medley Relay: 4th place – 1:56.86
- 200 Free Relay: 6th place – 1:46.33
- 400 Free Relay: 5th place – 3:51.46
Boone finished 4th overall with 275 points, behind Johnston, Ankeny, and Council Bluffs Lewis Central.
The Boone girls will compete at the Iowa Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet Thursday and Friday, November 13 and 14, at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation & Wellness Center in Iowa City.
Prelims take place Thursday with finals on Friday.
