Boone Memorial Day Ceremony Greeted by Sunshine After Light Rain Shower

KWBG 05/27/24

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone Memorial Day Ceremony drew a nice crowd even though there was light rain showers and a rumble of thunder 45 minutes before the 10:30 scheduled start at the G.A.R. Plot at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone Monday. Rain ended by 10:00 and sun was shining as the Boone Veterans Council, Boy Scouts, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary, and V.F.W. Auxiliary gathered for the annual ceremony. Quite a few community members showed up with lawn chairs to take in the program.

The Boone Memorial Day Ceremony featured David Thoren, Chief Warrant Officer Five (Retired). Thoren retired last year after 41 years of service. Thoren was deployed to Iraq, Kuwait, and Kosovo in support of Operation Desert Shield, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Boone Boy Scouts were very involved with the Boone Memorial Day Ceremony. From the Reading of General Logan’s Order to participating with the Color Guard and the ceremonial Raising of the Flag. Scouts also helped with placing hundreds of flags on graves at the Linwood Park Cemetery.
