Boone School District to Seek Waiver and Implement Online Learning for High School This Week

KWBG 12/08/20

BOONE, Iowa—Increasing number of students at Boone High School contracting COVID-19 or quarantining as a result of COVID-19 has pushed the district to move to their online learning option at the High School only.  Increasing numbers of students with positive tests last week led the administration to implement their hybrid plan beginning Monday.  At a special School Board meeting Monday evening, the continued increase in numbers of students affected at the High School, Superintendent Julie Trepa recommended the move to online learning this Thursday and Friday and seek a waiver from the State Department of Education to continue until December 22nd.  The holiday break will begin on December 23rd and students would not return until January 4th.

Trepa told the board Monday that positive cases of COVID-19 were up in the district with the majority at the High School.  Additional absenteeism, most believed tied to the coronavirus, will mean nearly 20% of the High School students will be out this week.  Trepa noted that the numbers from the elementary buildings is substantially lower and the Middle School, Franklin, Page and Lincoln will all continue on site learning.  Because of the number of students affected, many of the extra-curricular activities have been cancelled or postponed at this time.
