The Boone softball team moved one win away from the state tournament Saturday, July 11, defeating Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 6-4, in a Class 4A Region 6 semifinal at Seargeant Bluff.
The Toreadors used a strong start at the plate and a complete-game effort from Brooke Weisbrod in the circle to secure the road victory and advance to the regional championship game.
Boone wasted little time taking control, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored once in the first, and the Toreadors scored four runs of their own to grab a 4-1 advantage.
The Warriors battled back with three runs in the second inning to tie the game at 4-4, but Boone regained the lead with a run in the third and added an insurance run in the fourth.
The Toreador defense and Weisbrod then kept the Warriors off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Weisbrod starred both at the plate and in the circle.
She collected four hits, including two doubles, drove in two runs and struck out five batters while pitching a complete game.
Boone’s offense produced contributions throughout the lineup.
Claire Hardinger scored two runs, while Hadley Gustafson and Makenzie Klatt each crossed the plate once.
Halle Bailey added a hit and scored a run.
Kaylee Kuehl finished with a hit, a run scored and two RBIs, while Harper Kuehl contributed a hit and drove in a run.
Tenley Williams recorded two hits for the Toreadors and Finley Houser added a hit.
The victory sends Boone into the Class 4A Region 6 championship game.
The Toreadors will travel to Alleman to face North Polk (19-16) at 7 p.m. tonight with a trip to next week’s state softball tournament on the line.
