The Boone softball team came out swinging Tuesday, July 15, in a Class 4A, Region 7, final against North Polk in Alleman.
But a fast start wasn’t quite enough as the Toreadors fell to the Comets, 6-5, and Boone ended its postseason run just one win shy of the state tournament.
Boone scored five runs in the top of the first inning, putting pressure on the Comets early.
But North Polk, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, chipped away, scoring in five consecutive innings to complete the comeback and punch its ticket to state.
Shannon Jenkins delivered a standout performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs.
Avery Howie added a hit, a run and an RBI, while Carly Busch, Kaylee Kuehl, Claire Hardinger, Sydney Adams, Hailee Bingham, and Brooke Weisbrod all contributed offensively.
Starting pitcher Busch took the loss, while Weisbrod pitched in relief and recorded two strikeouts.
