BOONE, Iowa—The City of Boone is moving forward with efforts to reduce the amount of storm water getting into the city’s sanitary sewer system. Reducing the Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) is not something new. It’s a practice that has been in place for a number of years. The new effort is however the biggest push to deal with the issue.
Last year, the City Council amended ordinances prohibiting the discharge of sump pumps into the sanitary sewer. Previously it was allowed during winter months with property owners switching the sump pump discharge in the spring and fall. The city retained the services of WHKS Engineering to assist with the effort, ensuring that homeowners no longer have sump pumps connected to the sanitary sewer system. The next step is a home inspection program which will begin this month.
There is a targeted area where the inspections will begin, on the west side of the city. A public meeting is being held at 5:00 p.m. Monday at the Boone City Hall Auditorium to provide more details about the process. This will be the second such meeting conducted by WHKS.
