BOONE, Iowa—The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad and James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center got a little cleaning up and hosted a big crowd of young campers this week. 140 participants of Camp OK visited Thursday. Camp OK is a week-long, six-day, five night, camping experience for children who just completed the 5th or 6th grade. It is fully funded by the Kiwanis clubs in the Nebraska-Iowa District and by the NE-IA Kiwanis District Foundation.
Camp OK has been held for the past several years at the YMCA Camp in Boone County. Participants take part in numerous activities including archery, canoeing, horseback riding, nature hiking, pottery, rock wall climbing, swimming and wildlife study. In prior years, there have been 90-to-105 campers taking part. Children are selected by local Kiwanis clubs in coordination with their local elementary schools.
30 campers arrived early on Thursday, volunteering to help with cleaning the museum, wash windows in all the passenger cars and pick up trash on the grounds. All participants took a full length excursion train ride.
