John Roosa, Administrator, Boone County Landfill and Recycling talks about landfill operations and dealing with the amount of material coming into the landfill. Story County and Ames construction and demolition waste had previously been diverted for a year but are back to bring material to the landfill. At the same time, more construction activity in Boone County and the rest of the service area continues to increase similar material. Roosa said he likes to be involved with planning for demolition projects, because with extra effort quite a bit of material can be redirected for other uses. We also talked a little about long term solutions for landfills that are nearing end of life over the next several years and he said there’s more than Boone County that will be impacted. The Plan focuses on projects expected in the next five years, but also has several that are more than five years.
