With us on Coach's Corner on KWBG, we're going to talk to Madward boys track today. Steve Perkins joining us as the Tigers had a chance to get started with the ADM co-ed last Thursday.
And I always feel like that's a nice meet just to kind of get your feet wet a little bit, Coach. And unfortunately, we've had to get some newer feet wet maybe a little sooner than we had kind of hoped. It sounds like the injury bug has kind of been over in Madward right now.
Yeah, we got a few kids banged up. We got a great group of juniors and seniors. We got right out like 19 juniors and seniors out. And senior class, there's a lot of veterans, junior class, we got a lot of veterans that have been around for many years.
And just a great group of kids that invest time. And yeah, we just had to experience some injuries and some reoccurring things that have happened from maybe the fall and or some kind of freakish type of thing outside of track that has happened.
So we just got some things that where we got to get some kids back and where we're trending in that direction, get mostly all of them back here. But we're going to make sure they're ready to go before we put them back into the meeting competition.
So the EDM meet, last Thursday, we always use this as kind of a time trial, go down there against a great competition. And basically, what do we want to see at that point where it's almost like a glorified practice or a scrimmage and a run through.
Some of the freshmen that come in, you know, can show them, you know, whether it's Shane Jones, proper warm up techniques, marking their steps in the wall and jumping high jump, probably warm up in the shot and disc, all our throws, get a chance to throw.
And we get everybody involved. And but yeah, we had some younger kids that probably got into some events that a lot of times maybe we won't put them in right away.
But just with some kids out, you know, got about five or six kids that were out that just kind of keep it cautious and make sure they're ready to go. And but it turned out it was a chilly night. It was a challenging night.
I had a couple kids, or one kid kind of tweak a hamstring a little bit, I think he's going to be okay. But just hopefully we're on the men's and we'll get better for the future. And we keep working hard.
I can't complain about any of our work ethic or the kids are showing up, they're doing what's expected of them. They're a great group of kids to be around. And it's a lot of fun to be coached with a team like that.
Well, you had a couple of nice I know, and like I talk about always with these early season meets, I never really look at I just want to see how the kids compete. You know, I know you guys just want to get out there and compete against somebody else.
So we know what the throwers can do against each other every day. And most of the runners kind of know where everybody kind of sits. And it's just nice to get some other competition.
So I thought it was real nice to see Jevon Severson really step up with a couple of nice throws in the shot and the discus and Logan looked like had a pretty good jump on the long jump. Yeah, Jevon had a great start, tremendous start.
He threw well to the state indoor meet as well. We got third place there, great, great competition this time of year.
And then came back and not ideal conditions to be throwing the discus on last Thursday night, it was a strong north wind, you don't dust up to 30 miles an hour upwind.
Temperatures dropping through the night and he threw 138 feet, 7 inches into that north wind and had a great start. So for him that's a PR and that's exciting. And then also in the shot put 351.5, makes a great competition here from some Grosjean Dowling and Gilbert and ADM.
So that was very good there. And we all said, you know, Evan O, Big Blue, he had a nice throw into the north wind as well, throwing 115 feet and got off to a good start for him as well. So yeah, throws went pretty darn well that way.
Yeah, Logan's kind of coming back and jumped 18-6 and kind of jumped awkward on his last one a little bit. Kind of went off the long foot and sometimes early you have those little mistakes.
So hopefully we can correct that and get going the right direction, but not bad for him and where he is.
Well, something else I was looking at too, Steve, was that the distance events you always see, I know we talk about matter when it comes to sprints, but you guys also have a real nice history when it comes to distance events.
And I thought, uh, Kevin and Hudson had pretty nice runs in that 3,200, which to me feels good because I know what I saw on one night in the 3,200. I know what those kids can do and some other stuff.
And I know you'll be able to mix them into that, that four by eight, which has been pretty big for you guys last few years. Yeah, Kevin's a senior investor a lot of time and I'll feed him and, uh, um, he's gotten off to a good start.
You know, I think he's about close to 30 seconds faster and he's two miles from where he started last year. Um, and he also landed PR for him on Thursday. It's like his personal battle. We're really proud of him. You had a nice little split in the four by four as well for him.
Um, so he's gotten off to a nice start. You know, Hudson has a freshman to kind of coming in, not knowing necessarily our percent, um, expectations for the race, you know, first time ever running it in high school.
And I thought he did a really nice job of running within himself and not getting out of rhythm a little bit for what his kind of expectations were and his cases were, um, just kind of for the first time out, just kind of seeing where he was.
So, um, yeah, those guys got off to a great start, you know, four by eight, uh, ran up to state indoor meet as well. Um, those kids, uh, getting off to a great start, uh, um, as well. So, uh, yeah, looking forward to seeing what they can do tonight down in Earlham.
Um, and, uh, yeah, I think, uh, future looks prior for those kids. Well, and I think what else is fun too is you were just talking about the juniors and seniors.
When you talk about, you know, kids that have been through the wars with you kind of understand what it takes to, to do things at, you know, not just, just a regular track beat on a Tuesday, but at a district beat, at a state meet as well. You got some nice young kids though.
It sounds like two Steve that are going to be coming up through the program too. And that's always fun for me for the future. I know you're pretty excited about just the total number that you have this year. Yeah. Yeah.
It's, uh, it's got a good, good chunk of kids out here, um, in, in high school and, uh, kids are learning, learning fast, as we always say.
And, uh, sometimes we, like we said this year that injured bug hit us a little bit opportunities present themselves earlier than maybe most years. So those kids have those opportunities to kind of come in and show what they can do.
Um, the other thing is, uh, yeah, junior high wise, you know, they got a huge chunk of kids out there too. I think we got about 40 bullies out. Um, so, uh, really excited there.
Got some, uh, young coaches there that are motivating those kids and hopefully find their pointing up this year for those guys as well. And, uh, hopefully they've climbed up a good year, a lot of, a lot of energy down there and, uh, a lot of variety of things that they can do.
So be curious to see what they can do this year and excited for that as well. So yeah, just, uh, um, once again, just, try to see what we can do to still kind of figuring out where we're at with things tonight.
Uh, uh, moving to pieces around, kind of seeing what kids can do and, uh, um, hopefully the weather cooperates for us and we can have a good meet tonight. Steve, as always, uh, thank you so much for some time.
I would say good luck, but I'm, this time I'm going to tell you to stay healthy or get healthier and I will look forward to talking again here in a couple of weeks. You bet. You bet. Things are pointing out, man, we're getting back.
We'll get, we're getting guys back and they'll get healthy and do what we need to do to get there. And the rest of the guys are, um, just going to keep on competing and, uh, um, going hard like they always do. No, absolutely. They will.
Steve Perkins again, joining us, Madrid boys track here on coaches corner.
