Joining us now on Coach's Corner here on KWBG, get a chance to talk to Madrid Golf and Nick Pelger joining us and maybe not the best weather out to get going, Nick, to start this season. But tell me about the squad a little bit.
I know when you and I always talk about golf, we're excited because it means we're going outside for sports. And we, boy, it just feels like it's been a minute. So tell me about the kids. Tell me how things have started so far, Nick. Yeah, thanks for having me, first off.
But the biggest blessing that I have is the fact that a lot of these kids are returning from last year, which makes my job a heck of a lot easier for these early year, early season meets. And we went out there and I had a few kids that put up some of their best scores.
So it was nice. Well, and I think the one thing when we get started with a season like this and we're all kind of used to Iowa golf, it's not like you got, you know, 20 kids that have all moved from Florida, Nick, that have no idea what the Iowa golf thing is like.
So we're kind of used to, listen, we're going to be bundled up for a while. And then all of a sudden that weather is going to change and then you're going to get out there and it's going to be very, very comfortable. And that's why we golf. Let's just put it that way.
So let's start with the boys side of things, because I feel like this was somewhere that when we ended last season, we did our last interview, we had a lot of, I don't even want to say excitement, maybe is the best word I can say about this spring, because we knew everybody that was going to be coming back, Nick.
So tell me how the boys have looked so far. And that excitement level has to be up there a little bit. Yeah, for sure. The boys side, we had, we had four, four, five, five return. And they, they've done it all. They've put up some good scores.
And I, I'm really just excited about their, their potential that they have. A lot of, a lot of these guys are multi-sport athletes. They're, they're athletic kids and they could hit the ball a mile.
And if we can, you know, dial that in and understand that we don't need to be the biggest hitter out here to get good scores. I think they can figure it out and maybe we could get out of sectionals this year. We'll see.
Well, I'll tell you what, Nick, if you've got the, the potion that can figure that out, there's going to be some other coaches around the state. They're going to chat with you.
I mean, everybody loves to hit it high and let it fly off the tee, but it always comes down to the putting, the chipping, what's our nine iron looking like today? What's our distance from out?
Sounds like though, we've got some kids, especially on this boy's side that can figure this one out. I think so. It's yeah, it's a blessing that I've got, I've got a couple of boys that play obviously not year round, but like they, they've got memberships there out at Woodward.
And so they're able to go out and play with their family or play with each other. So it makes it easy. And yeah, just not starting from scratch and letting, being able to let these guys play and figure out what they need to work on is awesome.
Well, and it looked like just from the first couple of rounds and obviously the first chance to get out there and Zach Newell kind of led you shot a 42. Taryn comes out, shoots a 48, Eli with a 50. I mean, we had some other kids that were right there with 52s as well.
I know once this weather changes, we're going to have these scores that start to drop. Were you happy overall with what you saw from the fellas that first day? I was impressed. It's with what the weather was like. It was 45 felt like 38. Just no sun at all.
Windy, just dark depressing day, but the boys, the boys came out and they, they were swinging the clubs pretty well and all things considered. I mean, we had, we had a half a practice last Wednesday because of weather. Uh, and then Thursday, Friday we were rained out.
So it, it was good to see that they came out and were able to, able to perform girls side of things. Coach had a chance to throw three of them out there and they're in the first meet of the season with Abby and Ashlyn and, and also Morgan.
It sounds like we've got some other newcomers that are going to jump right into that. Uh, I don't want to say golf fire, but into the, into the opportunity to, to golf at a meet, uh, coming up on Monday. But what'd you see from the three?
What'd you think of the three, in their first meet out this season? They're, it's what we talked about. They, uh, they can definitely hit the ball. It's, uh, it's the short game, chipping and putting.
If we can eliminate some strokes there, uh, Ashlyn and Abby, I'm, I'm sure they, they would be, they would say they'd be happy to tie for first, you know, instead of tying for second.
But I know both those, both those kids have an edge to them, a competitive edge, not just with other teams, but with each other that will kind of fuel them. So they, they work on that short game. It'll be good.
And, uh, Morgan, she, she was one of my beginners last year and has come such a long way. Um, she told me her big goal was to not get emotional during any of the matches. She's like, I'm going to be level edit the whole time. That's, that's her big goal for the season.
I'm like, you know what? That works. I like it. So it's good.
That's a tough thing too, Nick, when it comes to the course, let's be honest, we've all went out there and you know, you get a great first shot or you get a great second shot and then that third and fourth or somewhere else just doesn't kind of work.
And you can, well, when you're, when you're out there playing, uh, casually, it's a lot easier than when you're out there with, with an opponent out there, uh, you know, stepping and walking right with you. Feel like though that the girls have done a good job that first meet.
Yeah. Yeah. They did good. All things considered with just the conditions. I mean, it's, it's tough too.
Like, uh, I, I should have brought a whole team just knowing like where everybody else in the conference was at, but we were able to get some of our, our new girls out there to spectate and kind of wearing the game at from watching others.
And so I feel a lot more comfortable putting them out there and this upcoming Monday to finally roster a team. Finally. Yeah, for sure. That'll be great. That'll be awesome. Well, Nick, as always, thank you so much for some time. Appreciate the results as well.
We'll look forward to talking to some more golf with you here in a couple of weeks and let's hope the weather has, uh, has changed a little bit by then. Sounds good. Thank you so much. You bet. Nick Peltier again, joining us. I'm Edward golf here on coaches corner.
