Coaches Corner for August 10th: Chad Klein, Boone Football

Joining us on coach's corner KWBG gonna talk a boon football today chat Klein joining us as a tory doors Obviously day number one of real practice had fall camp and or excuse me fall and summer Workouts and stuff to get done. So chat. I guess let's talk about offseason stuff What do you feel like the kids did in the offseason and where were you happy? I guess with what you saw Yeah, definitely know a lot of consistency in our kids are shown up to some workouts You know weight room was a little Little thinner in the morning with our offseason guys who we have a lot more guys that are playing baseball that are dual sport or three sport athletes playing this year So but the kids that were in there that were offseason guys Worked hard every single day What more perfect attendance type kids at this season and then I know that coach Eastlin always has those baseball guys that are In the three days a week. I know They're in there all the time. So yeah kids worked hard all summer long And then came to work summer workouts for football, you know twice a week Did a good job. We had good numbers for that. You know kind of got some things installed Work some skill work and then No kids got along, you know, that was a good thing this summer just kind of see the How they how the guys work together and I thought they did a really good job this summer Chad it always feels like we're hurry up hurry up. Well, we have to hurry up because we're 18 days away What can you do in? To me the question always isn't what can you get done before that first game? It's what can you get done and then we got more to put in as well? So Chad tell me some things. What can you get done in in 18 days? I guess basically Yeah, you know what that's kind of how you know take advantage of the summer of What can we do without hitting and things like that? I know what all the mental stuff and all the new little tweaks You get a lot of offensive line steps You know find out who's gonna be throwing the ball try to get some of those questions. They answered before we hit today August 10th, you know, it's Yeah, you get some of that answered things start to move a little bit You can progress a little bit faster because you're like hey, we know what we're doing here We know what our every day drill is that you're gonna do it for offense or defense and And then then after that you're just kind of starting to tweak things a little bit So we're kind of in that part of we've after camp last week. We had put in 60 70% of the offense that we kind of assume we would have by the end of the season We have a good chunk of it in already defensively we've put in some tweaks and things from what we had last year And just starting to get the guys accustomed to it. So yeah, it's it's fast, but No, using camp last week as a few extra practices times to kind of Install not having all summer kids are doing pretty good job of get it where we need to be and I think we feel pretty comfortable Being there by the time we get to Green County week it always kind of feels like to that as important as skill positions aren't I know we'll talk about them here In just a few man. It always feels like Chad when you and I talk about this We talk about the trenches on offense and defensive line and Secondary and how are we looking here and how we looking there? So so tell me about is that kind of stuff? Let's start in the trenches first and kind of work our way out Offensive and defensive line Chad. Tell me about that a little bit Yeah, often flying will see a whole new starting five. We Graduated our all five of them from last year. He did a great job and now we're Starting a new group new tweaks to the offense to kind of make it simpler for them And hopefully in this place fast and physical and then defensive line You return two guys that were all district type players with Javi Casiano and then Jonathan van Rookle. So both coming back, you know, gonna solidify that defensive line for us And then well, we have a lot of guys that can vary getting some snaps in So it up front, you know offensive line did take some work But we got guys that are well, we've moved some guys around from like tight end to go play tackle things like that just because We need that depth at the offensive line, you know, that's kind of where it all starts for us So on the offensive side, so that's kind of where we start from there and then Moving out from there, you know, it then you start looking at receivers We bring back some guys that know we don't pull the ball a ton But some look for guys that can run some clean routes Romero young Coming back got a few snaps last year Patrick Houser gonna step into some rolls He did a lot last year. He'll come back in as our outside receiver Get some snaps there. So got some guys on that side defensive back wise we bring back some guys that were Got some significant playing time Patrick to play some corner force Jordan Grote Probably play the other corner Romero young will step in he'd started both last year at safety and corner at times. He'll be One of those two spots throughout the season And Maddox McIntyre will get some snaps out of safety So looking forward to that and Maddox will be in the backfield no returning only had 970 yards rushing somewhere in there last year almost got to a thousand mark Return there in the backfield and then you know quarterback after losing Jude had been a two-and-a-half-year starter Will probably bring in Fashion Peterson will be the most likely to start over there depending on how The rest of the next three three weeks go, but he looks pretty strong right there Some senior leadership out of that spot again The most likely backed up by we have a three sophomore guys that are kind of buying for those extra snaps So they're kind of battling it out that level and then linebackers would bring some guys back that played last year So we get our gay Lenin Trent Eckerd who got significant snap snaps last year That inside linebacker and then I'll find linebacker. We get some probably some sophomores That are set to know the role of like writer Hill's a back Jay Sharp some guys like that or what a decent F will apply play see some time as sophomores, so Got a nice mix of age and Experience can be back on both sides of the ball Well Chad something else too that I guess I always appreciate with you guys and your staff as well as that Just because you got a spot here doesn't mean that that's your spot for the rest of the season You guys do a real nice job. I think of moving kids around One week he might be a receiver next week. He might be a tight end now granted Similar where I might need you to run out and get a route But I also might need you to block a little bit more this week I kind of feel like Chad that's something that that is a strength for you guys that you're going to take The athletes where you have them and you're going to find spots We're going to get you on the field if you show that you're an athlete Maybe I can't get you as a starting quarterback, but maybe I throw you out there as a receiver Yeah, that's that's what we always tell the kids if we're going to come to you with a move

At any point it's to get you more playing time We're not going to move a kid to bury him on the depth chart or anything like that We're like hey, we're going to need you to do this because Well, first of all that he needs it and second of all you're going to see the field fast, you know it And we've had a few guys already you know older guys that have been willing to make that move already this summer and We might have a few more coming up, but It's Never for us to make it easier on us. It's to make it easier on Hey, you'll you'll see the field and it's going to be what's best for the players on the field. So And most of our kids have been over the years have been very understanding of why we need to make those switches And they've been very open to that and that's that's a good sign for our kids Schedule obviously the same schedules it was last year now And now obviously we'll switch things around with kids that are excuse me teams that we were had at home And now we'll be on the road this year So let's look at the schedule a little bit coach it and you'll start things off with your scrimmage against carol They'll come to town and you'll go to green county Perry and gilbert are back-to-back home games before you hit the road for iowa falls and it's adm at home Two games on the road with lua central counsel bluffs tj And then you wrap up the year with denison slash wig obviously in glenn wood So schedule hasn't really changed that Maybe you're making some different trips this year, but I guess the positive thing is denison and glenn wood are coming this way this year Yeah, you know It everybody's looking forward to the back-to-back to go to counsel bluffs back to back weeks, but um Yeah, I mean it's it's going to be a tough schedule. You look at adm who's a perennial You know top ten team in the state Uh, gilbert the last several years has been dominant um lua central is going to be low that they're going to be a favor for For a state title this year, I would imagine they no return a most of their offense Another they have a Will be a junior running back who led him or the Glendwood kid were back and forth all year long and who's going to lead the state in rushing And I think lua central a something also picked up a One of tj's top receivers. So that just made them even a little bit better um Yeah, and then I mean glennwood has been preseason. They're going to return most of their linemen. So they're going to be a Loaded up and no one of their running backs on their quarterback. I think it's all back So they're going to be really good offensively Uh coming back and then You don't know tj's going to go through a whole they went through a whole staff Switch and they graduate a lot of guys. So we'll see what they're like Oh by the time we get no Get to week seven before we see them, but we'll see what they're like, you know denison um That game from master for us really left a bad taste in our mouth toward the end of the season just because of all the things that went wrong and um When we went there to play and so kind of want to get them back You know get them in boon late in the season and see what we can do Iowa falls is going to be good. They're going to be senior dominated They with guys that have been playing three way or for three year starters So we'll kind of see what they're like, you know, it's another one's games We lost 14 to seven at home last year So that you know, we made some bad mistakes that really cost us um no green county We'll kind of see they they did a good job last year throwing the ball around on us a little bit So we've made some adjustments. So hopefully try to alleviate that a little bit and then Perry Perry ran the ball very well last year. It's a matter of um Can we overwhelm them with some other things just to make sure that we stay on top of yet? They had some nice pieces Uh here and there so yeah, it's just like anybody else. You start to look at by time you get rofters and Start to see some film and things like that to kind of see how you match up with other teams um It's hard to see that because right now we don't know what everybody has exactly because Let's see Open enrollment and everything else in Iowa.
