Coaches Corner for August 31st: Chad Klein, Boone Football

With us on coaches corner, KWBG gonna talk to Chad Klein, Boone football, Torridor has come up with a real solid 14 to seven victory over Green County last Friday night. And Chad, I had one of your coaches tell me in the post game said, you know, when you're in a rock fight, sometimes you got to stay the course. I got to tell you what, I walked out of that game. And yes, it feels great when the team you're covering wins. But I was just proud of the effort everywhere. I couldn't find a spot that didn't feel like it pulled its weight last Friday. Absolutely. Kids did a great job. You know, especially a lot of guys stepping into new roles and having some new faces out there. No, I couldn't have asked for a better start to the season for what they did. It's, they were patient throughout the night. You know, it's coach Johnson called a great game on offense. It was kind of stuck with what we were doing. The kids executed very well, you know, even though it was 14 points. It was the moment of keeping the drive. We knew our game plan was to take the air out of the ball and, you know, I'm not let them score fast. And I think our kids executed everything we wanted to do on both sides of the ball to perfection on Friday. Chad, it's crazy to say this, but you had a senior who you knew a ton about in Maddox McIntyre. We knew how close he was to a thousand yards last season. And we kind of knew, you know, what you're going to get from Maddox, to be honest. And it's a lot of good things, by the way. But you got another senior. We didn't know a ton about Ashton Peterson because he didn't play quarterback last year. And those were two of your two key kids last Friday. Yeah, definitely know that we knew that teams will key on Ashton or on Maddox. All eyes were on him after coming back after a nice junior year. And he drew a ton of attention, which within the script the offense that allowed Ashton to pick up the pieces on the backside of him and Ryder Hill-Beckin. Ashton did a great job first time. I think probably starting varsity altogether, you know, let alone be in quarterback run in the offense after a year off, you know. He did a great job. I think he put up like 80 rushing yards and like almost 50 passing. And went on punted fourth grade and add in to get like a 47 yard average on four punts, which was a key turning point in the game at a couple of moments. So a great job from him. You know, you never know what you're gonna get when you have a guy step into that situation. Did more than we probably asked for from him on Friday night. Well, and then, and I told you this off air before we started talking. And this is nothing against Ryder Hill-Beckin, who had a fantastic game, had 10 total tackles and seven solo. But I kind of felt like there wasn't one kid that I zeroed in on on defense last Friday because everybody was making plays and you want that. You want that lunch pail mentality. Everybody comes to hit. Everybody comes to tackle. Chad, you had to be watching film defensively and there's gotta be a bunch of smiles on your face. I definitely know. We've talked about this week already discussing the idea of team tackling and some of the physicality that we saw. And then just some of the heads-up plays that kids made all night that were big. You know, a couple of guys that we kind of plugged in this week to get some reps at Nose, you know, it's Rex Wilson and Fox Schroeder did a great job of just finding the guy, making some plays here and there. And everybody kind of stepped into their role and did a great job out there defensively. We couldn't have asked for a better team, defensive effort to lead to just the seven points on the short field. So defensively, we're really impressed with what we did the first night. Well, and you had a quarterback who wanted to chuck him deep and also was the one that could beat you with his legs. That always makes me nervous. I don't care who you're playing against because if you go back and play coverage and you don't have a spy on him, he can take off. He can hit the, you know, short passes. I mean, there's a lot of stuff that could have happened. You guys really held Stalder though in check where he didn't feel like that athlete that, oh my gosh, we could be in big trouble. He kind of just felt like a real good athlete that was out there that, you know what? We're kind of doing a good job on him. Yeah, definitely. You know, we kind of committed the idea that we're going to have five guys take care of everything in between the tackles. And then the other six are going to be out in space and make sure there's nothing over the top. We wanted to make sure that they had to run the ball. They were going to beat us. They were going to have to try to keep it on the ground. We didn't want the big plays. And our kids, like I said before, kids executed the game plan to perfection. Did a great job. We're patient. I know Green County, I think at the end of the night had more yards than us. They ran more plays than us. But at the end of the day, you just got as long as it's the point of the difference. So our kids were okay with that. They were okay with the bend, but don't break mentality. That's what led to the victory for us. Chad, as much as we would love to talk about last week, a whole bunch more times, and I would love to do that. I know you guys have to flip the script and you have to, you got to change things pretty quick. So tell me about Monday at practice and kind of getting back to, and I'm using the air quotes right now so you can see me, but getting back to work. Yeah, it's right away, you know, we turn around on Monday. We're back to watching film, quick little, hey, these are some good things, but here are the things that we need to do to get better. You know, it's only week one. Biggest jumps typically are from week one to week two for teams, so we got to kind of see what kind of jump we can make from week one to week two. But yeah, watch some film, see what Perry's gonna bring, and then we, you know, get back to work. It's been hot this week, but kind of being smart about when we go real hard versus the times that we got to take some mental reps a little bit. But then it's also senior week. So for senior night, and kids are excited for this opportunity this week. An interesting Perry team coach because they get this eight to zero lead on Ogden. In fact, it's eight to zero through halftime. And then the second half, it was almost like everything kind of flipped, Ogden ends up outscoring them 29 to zero. So when you're breaking it down, Chad, you have to break down the first half because you're thinking, okay, they held the team scoreless in the first half, but then you also have to, I guess, kind of look at that third quarter and say, okay, what did Ogden do that was better to kind of get them going? Chad, it's really an interesting tale of two halves. Yeah, definitely. And it kind of looked like Ogden went to a little more of a hurry up type of situation, got some favorable numbers situations, I think is kind of what it looked like. But we really just focused on what was, what was Perry really trying to do offensively, just looking from a defensive standpoint of, no, they're gonna run the ball. They're gonna run single wing, run downhill. I mean, they had a hundred yard rusher. I think he had 24 carries for 111 yards on Friday. So they do a nice job. They're gonna run the ball a lot. They're gonna use some of their sizable linemen to try to move things inside. So we're trying to figure that out. And then it's kind of hard for us defensively or offensively, just because our scheme and Ogden's scheme, they're a little bit different, but kind of what it seemed like, they were just Ogden went to the idea that we have left two-way players and we're just gonna try to kind of wear on you a little bit and see if we can kind of tire you out a little bit. And it was really effective form. They were able to get the ball, keep momentum. It looked like they settled in a little bit too. I think Ogden probably had a few more younger guys on the field, so they settled in a little bit by the time that second half and they were able to flip the script on Perry. But yeah, like you said, Perry for that first half moved the ball and did a nice job defensively. So we're looking for an improved Perry team this year. Chad, final thing for me, as you just mentioned, it is senior recognition night and always early in the season, which I know some people say, well, why do it early? And I'm always like, man, I'd rather do it when the weather might be a little warmer than when it's cold and it's just terrible out. So tell me about being able to recognize some seniors, even though we're earlier in the season, boy, they put in a lot of time here for boom football. Yeah, definitely. I always like to recognize them early because football season, I always hated to wait till the very end and then by that point kind of beat up or things happen that they don't get that opportunity. This provides hopefully the best opportunity for them to get into this game health-wise. But yeah, these guys did a great job. You know, they're fantastic. We talked a lot about them from Friday night, what that game meant to them because this was a group that did not have a lot of wins in junior high level, even freshman level, they were, it was a small class of guys and they stuck together, their leadership is fantastic. They're great about bringing people into the mix. That's not part of this class. And they're a big reason why we were successful on Friday night because they're finding ways to make the team their own. And that's bringing people in and they're a likable young group of young men that do things the right way and that's gonna provide a lot for our program.
