Coaches Corner for February 12th: Cole Corson, Boone Girls Basketball

KWBG 02/12/26

Transcript

With us on Coach's Corner on KWBG, we're going to talk Boom Girls basketball.

Cole Corson joining us as the Troy Dorsett get ready for a regular season finale with North Polk coming up on Friday night and kind of in a weird spot right now and maybe it was that way last year Cole and you might be able to remember a little better than me but at least as the time of that we're talking here we don't have pairings yet.

Now those should be out on Thursday afternoon. I guess what I'll ask you Cole is it this feels kind of late that we're getting these pairings out this year or was it the same last year and I'm just forgetting.

You know I think it's probably a little bit of both but I actually agree with you that I think they just keep coming later and later that typically you know going into your last week of games right typically you would think that it's you know last week just from years past when we played Gilbert in the years past that our schedule really hasn't changed in the last four years we have typically known who were playing first round so like the last time I think it was two years ago we ended up playing Gilbert first round we knew when we were playing Gilbert that they were going to be our first round opponent so yeah it just seems like it's a little bit later this year maybe it's a calendar fall year whatever but yeah it's it's interesting that it's this late because you're almost going to be complete regular season done you can't even go live watch anybody I know we have huddle now but to me live watching is a lot different than watching you know on a computer screen and stuff like that just from game speed and stuff like that so if you get an unfamiliar opponent you're relying on tape and people you talk to versus your own eyes being able to maybe get to a game and I always think that's a little bit man that makes things way difficult too just because you don't know what the crowd was like you don't know what their bench was like did somebody was somebody not playing that night that you know that that normally is a important person as a sub I mean there's a lot of intangibles that well I know you like a good conspiracy theory so maybe we better not go down that road uh let's talk about North Polk though coming up on Fridays you kind of wrap up the regular season I know that the first time when you guys got together this was one of those games where I know we're going to probably talk we do season wrap where you look at the final score and you say 17 points okay tell me more about that game well I watched it I remember watching it this this is one of those battles where it's one quarter cold that just kind of got you yeah and it was early on we got down I think like 16 points early on and then we worked our way back and in the fourth quarter we got it down to a possession where I think we had three shots at three to cut it to single digits and it was a game that you know there was a couple runs from both teams they had their early run we kind of had our mid third quarter run to really get back into the game and it was one big shot away from really the crowd really getting behind it and making it you know kind of a scary situation for them being you know a top 10 team sitting there on the road and you got a single digit game now so yeah it was one of our you know semi turning points I think piggybacking them off of our Carlisle performance was something that really propelled us into some second half victories and building some confidence well and it definitely helped out I know down the road when it came to you know victory against Hoover and a victory against Carroll and there's some other ones in there as well that I know it helped and maybe that's some things that we can look back on when you talk about kind of building blocks I mean heck it's never bad I don't think I mean sure it'd be great to play somebody like that at your last game but a team that you battled with you know that can't hurt to go back into them here on Friday yeah it's gonna be a test for us that's for sure they got you know the Schultz girl and Sullivan that kind of lead the way for them both are college bound guards and they do a lot of good things and their role players are starting to kind of figure out what they are and you know they've they finally got taken out as conference champs but they had won the conference I think for four straight years whatever it was and had a 50 plus game win streak snap but they're I mean they're still sitting at 17 and three and they know how to play basketball and they play it at a high level so it's going to be good for us to get back you know and compete again and just keep building where we've done in the second half and we've had some really really big points in the second half and understanding the consistency of those points has to keep building and that's how you become you know a better team and you you know able to knock off some conference opponents and get some of those wins because of it well and you guys got hit with some injuries and got hit with the with the sick bug as well and hopefully those have kind of passed but man it's been one of those seasons Cole where it kind of feels like you feel great for a couple of weeks and all of a sudden one kid kind of comes down with sickness and just kind of runs through your team and I know that kind of hits you against ADM and a little bit against Carlyle too.

Yeah, yeah the sickness bug we kind of semi avoided it a little bit and but the other part of it was yeah we had an injury early on to Avery you know we're battling some injuries of late in that Carlyle game.

Macy's kind of re-aggravating her ankle a little bit so she's getting some rest right now.

Abby was getting some rest too she's been having you know some of her knee's been swelling up on her a little bit at times too so you have you know three contributors into a team that's fairly young to begin with and then you top it off that we've had you know girls in and out of practice because we've just had so much you know illness going through that we're starting now to semi get healthy again but it's like you're almost regrouping because you know we had 25 girls out and we had 17 girls at practice last week and it's still like man this is a much different feeling having 17 girls versus 25 like the gym just seemed empty even though we still had 17 girls there but we had eight girls either sick or hurt or resting or whatever it was so it was just a different environment and so it's hard to from a player standpoint is hey who who am I playing with this this night because don't we've you know had three girls gone for illness for Carlyle plus injuries pile up against Carlyle and some of those transferred over to ADM and so it's just getting everybody back will be a positive thing too hopefully on the healthy train coming into North Polk and get some of the injuries healed up as well.

Cole as always thank you so much for some time best of luck against North Polk we'll see you in all the men on Friday. Awesome thanks Ryan.

You bet North Polk and Boone coming up Friday night we'll have that for you on KWBG that's a Boone Girls basketball head coach Cole Corrissen joining us on Coach's Corner on KWBG.
