Joining us on Coach's Corner here in KWBG, we're going to talk Madrigirls basketball. Kelvin Adams joining us. Tigers had a one-in-one finish in the postseason this year.
What we're going to start out with was such a great win against East Sac County and then we'll obviously talk about Hinton as well. But I'll tell you what Kelvin, I know we talked before going into the East Sac County game.
He gave me a couple of things on what you thought about East Sac County and then I get there and everything that you're talking about comes true. I mean you want to talk about a scouting report. Sir, I'm going to tip my cap to you. I know you can't see me but I'm tipping the cap.
You had the scouting report down perfectly. You guys knew what was coming.
Yeah and we always say going into postseason, just if we can avoid a conference school and we feel confident in the work we put in with our scout and I got great assistance who we load up on film all season long but definitely postseason time.
So Coach Smith kind of runs our scout and then we all fill in from there and yeah so we knew what they were doing and what they were capable of and so yeah there was no surprises for us and that's always when we get our girls to buy into the scouting report and then they get into the game and go oh this is yeah this is the place where you walk through their out-of-bounds plays and oh yeah here's their girls tendencies and so it was spot on and they got a really nice guard that Laura Eagleton did a great job defensively on and I think she scored the first five points of the game and then didn't score the rest of the night.
So that was a great defensive effort and again finally sometimes those early games it takes one or two minutes to realize we're playing a basketball game and this is what the scouting report was talking about and so after about two minutes they locked in and got it taken care of.
Well and I'm going to reverse it a little bit and this is I'm not trying to take a shot at Esak County here but for some reason they must not have watched enough film on Lauren Dvorak because she was fantastic in that first half.
I kind of felt like in the third quarter she got a little timid and which surprised me a little bit because she was so successful in the first half but Kelvin man she was just like jump on my shoulders let's go.
Yeah and we needed that because we we got off to kind of a slow offensive start and they Esak plays his own they've played it all year every film we saw and so we planned for that and didn't think there would be any adjustments and there weren't and so Lauren did a phenomenal job in the high post and we were able to find her and not only her scoring but then she drew she started after she got a couple buckets drew multiple defenders and then found Laura and found shooters on the outside so she was definitely a key for us in that first half to get us going when we needed on the offensive and she's had that capabilities all year.
Lauren's that girl that we we kind of get after from time to time because sometimes that it's not it's not a motor question but just her ability to score or look to score is a little bit of a roller coaster and so we're glad that night she decided to to be riding the roller coaster for us and and she really was huge in that first half.
We talked about this all season long and it was quarters and what can we do defensively can we hold teams under double digits in the quarter so the second quarter gets done you hold them to nine I go into the halftime break and I'm kind of looking at things and I'm like man that was not the best defense that they could have played yet they still held them to nine.
Kelvin you come out in the third quarter you hold them to nine as well we'll get to the fourth here in just a second but man you had to feel good after three quarters about that defense.
We we preach single digit quarters all the time and we tell them you know four you get four you're gonna win a game you you get three uh you're you're about guaranteeing yourself that you've got a really good shot to win the game too you're playing a toss-up and if it's one one single digit quarter or less than that you probably ain't one of the basketball games so we we hang our hat on trying to get three for sure um and then four to guarantee it and so yeah going into that fourth quarter you got you got two of the two of the three and so we really cranked it up in that fourth quarter.
So you're up by three points going into the fourth quarter I think you hit an early shot and all of a sudden it's five they come down on I don't even know how many occasions because they don't have that stat book in front of me I don't think I keep those stats anyway but Kelvin if I would have told you you hold the team at home on the road that's not anywhere close to Boone County to zero in their home gym there's no way you're taking me out to uh Chili's afterward.
Is there even a Chili's up there Ryan? Well I don't know if there is but let's just pretend like there is. Okay it's yeah I would have taken you to Chili's okay I've done that for you. That's fine.
I think the the one thing that kind of goes unseen in that fourth quarter too is as we lost Lauren Dvorak for about a three minute stretch she took a shot to the nose and was bleeding and we couldn't get it stopped on the bench and so Jaylen Fuson who's been our kind of our sixth man off the bench came in and spotted us three huge minutes and you know initially we're kind of all looking over our shoulder going this we have this thing this blood stop jet you ready you ready and Jay gave us a couple big rebounds a couple deflections contested some shots and it's funny because after the game we stopped in Carroll and got a bite to eat and and she didn't even remember she took a she took a top of the key three she didn't remember shooting she argued with us I did not take a shot and she took one in rhythm that we were okay with her taken but she seems like she kind of blocked out for those three minutes but she she played really well in those three minutes and bought us bought us some time before we could get Lauren back in again who's our defensive anchor and and so that was that was huge in that fourth quarter all right Kelvin so let's just or halfway through the court you don't have to exactly remember where you are what you remember but my gosh did you keep looking up at that scoreboard and thinking they're getting shots they missed some layups they missed some open looks you guys contested a ton of stuff though I do remember that but I mean you have to look up at the scoreboard at some point and go okay listen we're not lighting it on fire offensively here in the fourth but they're doing nothing right and and yeah we we've said all year long that you know we're not a necessarily an offensive powerhouse that we we talk about if we can hold teams in the 30s we're going to give ourselves a chance we typically score score in the high 30s so we know if we're if we can hold teams in the 30s we're going to be in dogfights so to start that fourth quarter with them at 32 we knew we needed a single digit quarter um and so I the only thing I was looking up at the at the clock was the time and hoping that thing ticked a little bit quicker so but no it was it was just a great great team defensive effort and again as we always talk about we we found some energy in that fourth quarter too so our our bench was was electric in that fourth quarter and so they they always find a little spark post-season wise and we like that how long had you worked on the entrance into the locker room dance and was that a first timer you know what coaches have been we've been working on moves from time to time they surprised they threw us off our moves a little bit this time with the silly string and so he tried to remind them that yeah the silly string was good but we leave the locker and cleaner than we found it so just you want to let up on that trigger a little bit because you're picking it up um so yeah it's always kind of a fun tradition after after a W that uh the coaches we dust off the shoes a little bit as we enter the locker room so it's always it's always fun to do um with the coaches the girls always I think get a kick out of it and uh when you're doing it in the postseason it's even better feeling yeah it feels even better well obviously we we knew what the next hurdle was going to be on the road at Hinton um might as well got a you know an Airbnb to be closer I think um I'm gonna that'll be my last comment on that road trip but I guess you know going into a game like that Kelvin man you can't have the deck really stacked anymore against you yeah and we prepared for it just the same we would any game sure so we we poured we poured hours into the end of the film did did the same routine for Scout and everything and I think the best part for our program is some of our girls were a part of the team a couple years ago when we went up to South Hamilton um and faced a similar Hinton's I mean they're they're an elite basketball team there they got elite basketball players and um they're really good and so but South Hamilton was kind of that same feeling going up there um and so we we prepared and talked about that game a little bit and again it was nice having some girls that were there Lauren Dvorak, Laura where Sam were on that on that team and made that trip where we went up and knocked off a two-seat and so we kind of prepared with the same mindset um and so and obviously when the game rolled out we did some different things we tried to triangle and two um there are two top guards and we held them both uh under their average and one in single digits and then the big that we said hey we're gonna let her shoot she starts the game burying a three nothing but net so and another girl at average six that we said we're gonna live with shooting she gets 20 and so um there there are a reason they're the number one team so they're they're a very deep team and so we tried to you got to take some chances and do some different things to to try to compete and in the end some of the girls stepped up for them and it wasn't wasn't for lack of effort or lack of preparation on our on our girls part and so that's something when we left left Hinton uh we were proud of them for that they put it all out there we said empty the tank and give us everything you got for 32 minutes and they did that just that Kelvin whether it be one or 101 it's still the you know ending to a season what was the locker room like afterward i tell them you know that's the one thing and you know i was thought as a young coach that i would you know have have a speech prepared i'm a little bit better at sometimes preparing my pre-game speeches than i am my my post game speeches we could talk about that Ryan if you wanted but the the post game uh that last night i you just i can't prepare for um you tell them there's only only five teams in the state that don't have that feeling um in their final game and so it's so there were tears there were you know there was some sadness but um it was just it was a fun group that came to get came together it was probably the tightest locker room we've had in my five years um and so just thanking our managers who were with us all along the way and helping um at practice and at games and then our freshmen who grew a ton this year and we have freshmen that you know the postseason that they spent a lot of time standing and watched on the sidelines when we're in pre-game and scout so it's an it's an hour and a half but they're not getting up and down very much but we appreciate them being a part of it and the sacrifices they make and then all the way up to to our seniors and that's always the the toughest part is when you have that last post game talk with your three seniors and especially these three for what they've done for our program and and i tell them kind of the ultimate goal i think when you enter a program is to leave the program better than when you found it um and these three i told them did just that when they entered as freshmen um didn't know what what the uh the next four years would be like for them uh because even when lauren entered as a freshman i junior high i remember walking into the gym one morning before school and she was there i said good morning lauren and she said there's nothing good about this and i said oh that's awesome and she said i don't want to be here and so she didn't like morning practices very much in junior high and and as a freshman uh her sentiment wasn't a whole lot different so to get to talk about her and where she left her career um after four years was incredible um and so that was a great great group of girls and so ever since years but uh a lot of proud moments to talk about with that group as well yeah you did kelvin as always uh thank you so much for some time we'll wrap up the season here in a couple of weeks and i'll give you a chance to to sit back relax and and enjoy a non-coaches corner week and i appreciate it ron kelvin adams again joining us madrig girls basketball here in coaches corner
