With us on Coach's Corner here in KWBG, going to talk some DMACC women's basketball. The Bears on a nice little streak right now, five in a row. And Jocelyn Kavart joining us as a DMACC. Boy, I tell you what, heading over to Burlington is never the easiest trip.
But when you come home after giving up 44 points and you put 71 on the board, Joss, that that feels pretty darn good. I know we'd like to shoot the ball a little bit better, but a win is a win. And especially when you go on the road and win by 27, that's a good night.
Yeah, no, thank you. It was a fun game. And the gals, I mean, we got everybody off the bench, everyone played. And I tell you, Southeastern has a couple of really good players. So we went in a little bit worried. I mean, they're fast.
They put up a lot of shots, they can jumpers, hard to guard stuff. And the gals did a really nice job. We had put in Whitney Jensen, Jensen on some of the best players. Just her length can mess with them a little bit. But overall, a really nice team win.
Well, and Breely had a big night for you. Breely Clayburg has 24 points and nine rebounds. And I'd like to see her get to the free throw line a little bit more. I'm sure she probably would too, but 11 out of 15 from the floor coach. That's a darn good night.
Yeah, we, yeah, that was something game plan going in. We need to pound it inside and really it's so strong in there and so solid.
And I mean, even running the floor, while getting possession or position early down in the paint, I mean, and the guards that are really nice job of getting it into her, you know, I harp on him a lot. Every time I see a post open, I'm like, you've got to get in there.
It is not as easy as it sounds. Uh, so they did a really good job of getting it in. So what I like to hear, Josh, sometimes I get worried that you're starting to go over to that evil side of loving the guards and forgetting about the post players.
Well, I just make it sure, Josh, sometimes you talk up your guards to me a bunch and I'm like, Hey, what about us? Bigs? Come on. What about us? Never. Who would never forget the bigs?
Well, and speaking of, and this isn't just the bigs, because we had a bunch of guards that got a bunch of rebounds too, but 53 rebounds, Josh. That's a darn good night. Yeah. Yeah.
Um, and we were just really fortunate as far as, you know, hopping off the bus after the whatever it was two and a half hours going over there, the girls got warmed up, got legs going, um, and they were moving, they were bringing the whole body to the rebound, you know, sometimes we hop off the bus and you're a little tired and you're trying to reach for things and, and, but they were, they were moving, they were moving, they were going to get the ball, um, and bringing that whole body with them.
Well, I'm going to take you back a little bit, because I wanted to talk about last Saturday, because I had a chance to watch for just a little bit in between, uh, some youth basketball games that I was at, but what a crowd environment you guys had against Iowa central last Saturday, Josh, man, that is a home court advantage.
Oh my gosh. We are so grateful for our, for the families of our, our young ladies and the men's basketball team and then this community too, it was, it was such a fun environment to play in and we really do appreciate that.
Josh, it felt like it was like a regional 11 championship game. You've, you've coached in those before and been a part of those. I mean, that's what that, that it sounded like at least. Yeah.
And, you know, and I think the, the families and unity and then the girls, they all knew we had a little chip on our shoulders from that loss and we went up to Iowa central. So playing them here, they were really ready to go, but just, yeah, exciting environment. All right.
So let's talk about the good things that are happening right now. Obviously when, when a five game winning streak happens, you don't just luck into five consecutive wins, especially not in this conference and, and with your schedule, Josh, what's working well right now?
Uh, the girls are running. They're pushing the ball really hard offensively.
Um, primary break, secondary break, but, um, strong and confident in their finishes in that, you know, getting a lot of inside, outside looks, their posts are doing great in the paint, but then they're kicking it or we're driving and kicking at the right time.
Um, so just very, very, um, confident in that fast pace that we want to run. What's, uh, what's not working well. We got to talk about that. We got to talk about the not in the positive, but what about some things not working well right now, Josh, what are we working on? Yeah.
Our perimeter shooting has just been a little bit of a struggle all year. Um, but right now the Cal they're taking great shots, the shot that they are taking on three point shot for the shop that we would ask for the shop that we want, you know, they're within the offense.
They're timed, right? The girl, they're set. They're taking the right shot. So the percentage isn't great still right now. At least they're taking the right looks and their confidence is really good right now.
And I think it's a great time to have that confidence going into these last few region games, uh, conference games and then into regional play. Yeah. I don't know what the heck happened with the season. I know it can be a grind for sure.
You guys have been going at it for a while, but, um, you're, you're taking on a team that you had a chance to play already and we're starting to get into that where we, where we see him again. And I will, like, is it going to be your opponent coming up tomorrow?
And I know that was a tough one. The first time they got you by eight points and well, there's nothing better than getting a road victory. Is there? Right. Right. Right. It'd be great to go up there and get the win. But Martin has such a good team.
It's just such a good job of coaching. Um, you know, they always play super hard defense. They're going to be up in your grill with the ball. So we've been really talking about handling the pressure and, and again, hopping off the bus and being able to play right away.
What, uh, well, that means that win would mean a lot though for this, for this program, uh, Josh, just because like you said, we are kind of running out of regular season games at region 11 tournament is going to be here soon. I mean, this would be a huge road win tomorrow.
Oh man, that would, it would be, yes, absolutely. They're ranked. Um, we got Nyack down the road. That's ranked and Kirkwood down the road. That's ranked. So, um, really big game coming up.
And like I said, I think we're in a great spot for a couple of upsets here and, and the girls are looking forward to it. Josh, as always, thank you so much for some time. Best of luck tomorrow. Enjoy that beautiful trip to Estherville. I will not miss that.
I'm just going to tell you. Yeah. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Jessica bargain. Again, joining us, DMACC women's basketball here in coaches corner.
