With us on Coach's Corner here in KWBG, we're going to talk Boone Boys swimming. What a weekend that the district meets as Chris Mann joining us. And man, there's so much stuff to talk about. Chris and I were just visiting off air.
Coach is a little wound up still from Saturday, got a feeling. He does have a voice though, so there's a positive. But Chris, we are going to talk about one negative that happened on Saturday. But man, what an outstanding Saturday, and the boys brought it.
And that had to be a fun pool to walk out of after Saturday. It was unbelievable. You know, it might be some recency bias, but probably one of, if not the best meets that I've ever been a part of coaching.
And just to be around the level of energy that our boys had all day on Saturday. And me trying to master energy was, I was falling well short, but man, it was a lot of fun. And I can't credit them enough for all the work they put in the season.
And like I was telling you off air, there's no better feeling as a coach than when after a lot of months of hard work.
And for some of these guys, years of hard work, that stuff starts to pay off and you see those smiles and the glimmer in their eyes about how they're achieving their goals. And it's just phenomenal. I'm kind of getting goosebumps here talking about it again.
But yeah, it was a great day. Well, it just, we've had some really, really good Saturdays before where you've sent me results and whatever I'm doing, I kind of just stop and I'm like, Oh wow, what a, what a meat.
But just getting stuff from you on Saturday, it just felt a little bit different this year. Did you feel like Friday going into Saturday? Did the boys feel like they were ready to roll? I mean, did you feel this could happen? Actually kind of the opposite.
Earlier, earlier in the week, actually the week before going into conference, I was kind of feeling it and the boys were showing that like, okay, we're going to be, we're going to be really good at the conference meet.
And then our JV guys who, you know, they wrapped their season up at the conference meet were awesome. And so that gave me a lot of confidence. But Thursday, Friday, I kind of got this feeling of, man, we might've missed this. We might be just off. And so I was a little hesitant.
And going into that very first relay, that medley relay, just kind of pulled the guys aside real quick and said, this relay needs to be good because it sets the tone for all day. And they were just lights out, you know, they were, they were awesome.
And that ended up being that's the fastest medley relay that I've ever coached. So, you know, 15 years of a lot of great swimmers. And you look at not to discredit the guys that were on the relay, but you look at like there was no Isaac on that relay.
And just what they were able to do was just phenomenal and just set the tone for the entire day.
Well, somebody who was on that relay, who I know you were really excited for, and I know you're really excited for all the boys, but I know Simon and Abnett was, you were super, you know, tickled for this kid. 200 IM, he's going to state. I know he's put in a ton of work.
And I know that was one name that immediately came to mind after Saturday, Chris. That's a neat story. Yeah, it is. Holy cow. Talk about a kid who has just worked and done everything that I've asked for four years. And man, he has swam it all.
You know, he's gone through being a distance swimmer to being put on relays of the sprinter to last year, we thought he might qualify as individuals and he didn't.
And then, you know, he was an unfortunate part of a disqualified relay, you know, a top relay in the state last year. And then last year, the state meet, he literally went all weekend just to swim in the very last race of the entire state meet.
And this year, he gets to swim four races, including one of his own individuals and helped all three of our relays get to the state meet. So just a kid that I can't credit enough, you know, he was headed up to the blocks and he goes, I'm going to 201 here.
And we both kind of chuckle. We go, okay, that, you know, that'd be awesome. I said 203 would be great. And he goes to 201. Like he just called a shot and like the whole race, I knew it from the get go that he was on to something.
And I told our managers afterwards that I'm pretty sure I had a mild, hard fact during that race and been jumping and cheering a man. You just love to see stories like that.
Like you said, well, another neat story too, is somebody who's leaving the program and to somebody who's coming into the program. And tell me a little bit about Brady Hyman, just an outstanding weekend for this freshmen. And he's kind of one of those kids.
I think we look forward to the future and what can the future be, but let's not future it yet. Let's talk about what he did this past weekend. Cause wow, what, what a great weekend for the freshmen. I've been, I've been looking forward to Brady's future for a long time.
No, just a stud. He swimming sprints is something that freshmen don't do because you're going up against full grown men. You're going up against 18 year old guys as a 14 year old that are fully developed. And I mean, Brady, Brady's a pretty big kid.
He does not look like a typical freshmen, but you know, that he is the top freshman sprinter in the state. Only two freshmen qualified in the 50 freestyle. So, um, oh, make that three, three freshmen qualified and three freshmen in the a hundred freestyle.
So, um, man, we don't get hardly any freshmen, if any that ever qualify, um, for the state meet and for him to be in four events on Saturday and, and not just be in them, but, but to be competing to make a final, um, in that 50 free and even in the hundred free is just really special.
And, um, he's just such a great kid and, and works hard and brings a good level of energy to our team. And we're definitely looking forward to another three years of that. Well, man, I hate Chris. I always hate to take all this great, good stuff we're talking about.
And I do got to talk about the one negative that happened and it's not even this kid's fault. It's just something that happened. And, um, first off, I had a chance to watch him all football season. You, you and I would sometimes exchange texts.
If a game was going on, Hey, Carson, okay. Everything all right tonight. Yep. We're good. We're good. Coach. Everything's looking good for Carson, but unfortunately Carson had an injury on Saturday. Coach that boy, you never, you could never see this coming.
You were describing what happened. I won't make you go into full detail, but I'm just, that is something you would never see happen with a foot injury like that off of the deck. Yeah. It's just, it's just, you know, freak injuries happen.
Um, and like I was joking with him after like, Hey, these injuries were supposed to happen during your football season. Um, yeah, but he just caught his foot and sliced it pretty good.
Um, in the middle of leading off one of our relays and one of the relays that is a top end relay in the state.
Um, and halfway through that race to do that to his foot and to still finish the race and for, to help that relay qualify and to qualify in the 11th spot, um, for next weekend was, um, insane.
But then, you know, we had to take him off that last relay cause he had to go get stitched up at the hospital.
So if he was getting stitched up, um, Cooper Jensen just did a phenomenal job filling for him just a sophomore, um, asked to fill in a big role and, um, not just to fill in, but some a little inspired and those, those guys ended up, um, being district champs in that event and qualifying to make the final heat at the state meet without Carson, they were pretty proud of themselves and what they did for him on that relay.
And, um, you know, we're hoping to, hoping to have Carson on those relays this weekend because as, as another four year hard worker and, and been at the state meet, we rely on him all the time.
And, um, we're real hopeful that on Saturday we'll be able to rely on him one more time and that, um, we can send him off in the right way. Chris, I'm not a doctor. I know you aren't either. You got to tell me though, how does that kind of an injury happen?
I've seen the pick, my goodness. How's he able to get back in the pool? Oh, well, one positive we have going is that Carson doesn't kick his feet when he swims. Um, uh, and so he doesn't have to worry about that.
Um, I mean, the other positive is that he's just such a tough warrior of a kid. Never wants that he complained about anything afterwards.
Um, you know, he, he's someone who really understands the sports world and that things are bigger than sports and that like this, not the end of his end of his career, end of his life. Um, and you know, he's going to decide later this week if he's going to swim.
And I think he'll, I think he'll be able to, we might have to modify a couple things, but, um, he's just such a smart kid and a talented kid that, um, even with some modifications to how he has to maybe start or, or turn, um, that is, um, not going to be a problem for him.
And just, uh, I just hope that he's able to go and that, um, as a senior that he can finish his career the right way. Yeah, no question. I can't believe we've gone this far and I haven't even brought up Isaac Clark yet.
I feel like I should have probably led off with Isaac, but there's been so many neat stories. Maybe I'm just going to say I'm putting the bow on this with, with Isaac because here's a kid who finishes second in the 50 free.
I don't know why I've got this weird feeling that you and I are going to do a season wrap and talk about a state champion. I'm not, I'm going to throw it out there because I'm not going to worry about jinxing it, Chris. I'm going to try to manifest it, make it happen.
But while Isaac Clark to wrap up his career at the state meet, this is going to be a phenomenal exit for potentially one of Boone boys swimming's best ever. Yeah. I, you know, I, I have no doubt in my mind that, um, he is one of the best kids we've ever had.
And just in the pool out of the pool, he just, he's just such a good kid and fun and easy to root for. Um, and you can tell, man, the whole, he got second at our district meet on Saturday, but he's also second in the state, um, going into the state meet.
Uh, you know, the kiddies, the kiddies going up against is, is a, a really, really, really elite level summer. Um, but yeah, there, there's a chance and, and Isaac, if anybody can do it, man, he is just worked hard and, um, he's got the desire to get it done.
Um, but man, no matter what happens, this kid has just been the last couple of years been an unbelievable surprise. Uh, this year it's not a surprise. Probably why we don't talk about as much.
Cause it's just like, it's just so old hat that he is just doing these phenomenal, unbelievable things. Um, that we just, he did, it's just Isaac doing Isaac things.
Um, and you know, every once in a while, even I have to step back and it's sometimes I even pull on the side of like, let's just take a moment and realize exactly what you're doing here. Um, and how special it is.
And I just hope that, you know, when, when that last relay goes off on Saturday, that he's able to take a breath and take a step back and realize just how much he's done for this team.
Um, him, Carson and Simon, all of them, um, at the state meet on that relay, I hope that they can realize that, um, a lot of these other guys are there Brady, Cooper, Calvin, Isaac, why they're there because they are trying to be like those other three.
Um, and, and Isaac leads away in the pool and I'm so proud of all these guys and you know, what he has done and, and the light that he shined on Boone swimming is, um, it's recognized throughout the state and just so appreciative of them.
You knew I wasn't going to wrap this up with that one last thing. You knew this coach because this is just the way it is, but, uh, congratulations on, uh, on, on district coach of the year as well. I know I still haven't figured out the conference coach of the year thing.
I've got emails, I've got texts, I've got faxes in, we'll, we'll figure that out later. But anyway, congratulations. I know you're going to put this all in the boys and I know you just cause I know you well enough, but that was a heck of an honor for you on Saturday.
Yeah, thanks. You know, um, I do appreciate the fact that Boone swimming is getting some, some notoriety because of these guys. And, um, you know, in an uncloshed sport, the small schools very, very often don't get swept under the rug, but they're, they're an afterthought.
You know, we're just trying to sneak into state meet and be there and be part of the show.
But, um, for our boys that take second at a district meet on Saturday, um, against a lot of big schools and, and a lot of great competition and just have a type of meet and the type of season, heck the type of last couple of years that they've had of growing this program has been special.
And, um, they definitely have left the program in a better spot than they found it. And, and that's what we hope to continue to do. But yeah, it was, it was pretty special and, um, I couldn't be prouder of these guys. Chris, as always, thank you so much for some time.
Have a blast in Iowa city. We'll wrap her up with you in a couple of weeks. Yeah. Thanks. You bet. Chris mannegan joining us boom boys swimming here on coaches corner.
