Coaches Corner for January 28th: Kelvin Adams, Madrid Girls Basketball

KWBG 01/28/26

Transcript

Joining us on Coach's Corner, KWBG, get a chance to talk Matter Girls basketball. Kelvin Adams joining us. I'm probably going to jinx this by bringing this up, but we're guessing that pairings are going to be out potentially at the end of the week, maybe next week.

And so Kelvin, you're kind of in that tough part of January right now where it's cold out, the gym's nice and warm, you know, it's dark early as always. I mean, this is a tough time of the season. How are the girls kind of handling things right now with the grind of the year?

Yeah, basketball is, it's an incredibly long season. And especially you come out of break, Christmas break, and then there's not a foreseeable break in the future with school or basketball. And so it can be a grind.

And so our college coach that I played for, Todd Berry, I always called it the February Blues. And so in high school, I'd say it kind of hits it in late January. So we kind of had that conversation last week.

And so at the end of the week, we needed to hit the reset button and refocus. And I think we're going to do that. And we've done that so far, Sunday and the Monday and early this week. And so our next two days, we'll kind of be telling.

So we've gone through a huge grind of the season and we're kind of on the back half of the second part of the season, considering postseason, the third part. And so they put in a lot of time and too much time to sail it. And now I got to finish this thing the right way.

Well, and you guys have to still have some goals and I know you do, but you've got some goals that are super obtainable. And I think one of those, obviously you need two more wins to get to double digits. And I think you start adding after that.

And I mean, Kelvin, I'm looking at the schedule. We've got, you know, five regular season games to go. We've got postseason, obviously, as you talked about, who knows, maybe you get a little run there as well.

I mean, there's a lot of W still on here where all of a sudden we start talking about some things that I'm not going to bring up because I don't want to hear about me jinxing it. And when we do preseason goals, we have all the girls fill out an individual.

She was kind of individual team stuff. And a lot of them, a lot of them talked about that preseason. And so that was kind of part of our reset last week is not to dangle a carrot in front of you, but you put the words on paper and now it's right in front of you.

And how bad you really want it. Because words, words on paper were just after words. And so you got some opportunities in front of you. And we hit on that all the time.

Anytime you've got an opportunity, an opportunity and you're in the gym gets, don't get through it, get something from it.

And so you got opportunities in the weight room, sees opportunities, and they got an opportunity to do some things that haven't been done in any of our team sports in Mattergirls athletics in a while. They're definitely on the basketball front.

And so folks in a game at a time to achieve those goals. So we don't want to sit and keep talking about the end and what potentially could be, but it's in the back of our minds, in the back of the girls' minds. And I think that's okay.

I think that needs to be a motivator every day when we show up at practices to reach those goals. We got to work today. I think I always hear about that Kelvin. Don't dwell on it. Don't talk about it. Don't I think you want to talk about it, don't you?

I mean, you want to talk about it so you can be about it. I mean, I think that's one thing where we were, I don't know, I don't even joke about jinxing. I don't think it's jinxing. I think the more that it's in your head, the more it becomes obtainable, doesn't it?

I think, did you just drop a Kendrick Lamar line? I did. Yes, I did. Don't talk about it. Be about it. You're welcome. I was waiting. I thought so. Just for you, by the way. Yeah, I appreciate that. I think you're right though.

You can say don't talk about it, but then it's an elephant in the room. And so I think you have to mention, you have to reference it and then you try to put it out of your mind and focus on what's the next task in front of us.

So and so we haven't hesitated to mention it, reference it, bring it back, but understand that to attain that goal at the end, it is one step at a time. But otherwise it is an elephant in the room and girls are thinking about it. And so, so no, we do address it.

We do talk about it. I think that's okay. I know we've talked about Benerjee in the past, but I swear if that quote makes its way onto a t-shirt somewhere, just a buck, right? Give me a candy bar beforehand and we call it good. Is that fair? We got you.

Kind of like those Milan money shirts. We'll get the Ryan Benerjee shirts. You and Milan in the same breath. Oh my gosh. That's scary to say out loud. So I'm looking at schedule. We got a couple of road trip games left with Earlham and then ACGC to end it.

You sandwich things in with, with three home games. I mean, Kelvin boy, there's opportunities here. And I know I just brought up eight wins, but man, there's a lot of opportunities here.

I think at the end of the year, if they want to talk about, and they want to obtain things that happened on paper, they're out there, aren't they? They are. And it's a nice mix of conference schools. We got left. So Earlham is going to be a great test on Friday for us.

They're going to play a lot of pressure man. I'm guessing they did a little bit of zone last year and we had some success and they went man and we struggled against it. And that's kind of been, um, except tonight at times this year is pressure.

And then at times we handle it great. So we look at Friday as a great opportunity that we know what's coming at us. Um, and it'll be a growing moment for us. And, uh, and we're, we're due to shoot the basketball.

Well, so we're, we're due to put that ball in the basket over in Earlham and then next week is just a big week with three home games, um, and put in senior night to end the week, um, which is always a fun night.

Um, and yeah, then we always end with, with ACGC to, to end the year. And, um, and at that point too, it's, it's a, it's a conference game still, but you know who your postseason opponent is. Um, so you start to shift that focus a little bit to, um, to what's next.

And so it's not that you're not prepping for the last conference game, but that one kind of becomes, um, irrelevant record-wise. Um, but again, ACGC always provides a great opportunity for us.

And it did, and we did some really good things against ACGC, uh, when we played them after Christmas. And so we're looking to improve on that, um, to finish the year. Well, I know that we'll get a chance to talk to you before Valentine's day.

So I won't make you break down your, your top five most romantic movies that you've taken the wife to that that'll be, that'll be the next coach's corner we get to, but I will ask you Super Bowl prediction. What do you got for me? Oh man, see I'm a chief fan.

So this is one of these years where I don't even, you know, I'm, I'm a little bit carefree at the end of the year for the first time. Uh, and confused. Yes, that too. Um, you know, I'm going to roll with the 12th man. I'm going to go, I'm going to go Seahawks. Okay.

I'm going to go Seattle. All right. There you go. Kelvin Adams on the record. Hey sir, we'll see you for Ogden next week. Best of luck. The rest of this week. Thanks Ryan. I appreciate it. You bet. Kelvin Adams again joining us. Mattra girls basketball here in coach's corner.
