Coaches Corner for June 22nd: Charlie Eastlund, Boone Baseball

KWBG 06/22/26

Transcript

with us on coaches corner KWB G get a chance to talk some boon baseball Charlie Eastland joining us and I know a week ago we were having the conversation about what what a difficult week was coming up and oh boy I think it was one of those things Charlie I know you were excited to get back on the field and get to get some games in but it was going to be a taxing week Charlie if I would have told you right when we ended the call I would have texted you and said hey coach don't worry about it you're going to go four and two this week what what have you told me well just knowing who you're playing you know throughout that week and having a busy week I think you'd be you know okay with going four and two you know and probably actually happy going four and two in the week so really proud of our guys for for stepping up there you know in a busy week and here's the thing a lot of times like like she's six games in a week that's going to be really hard to get through but I mean 100% honestly going into the week I was pumped to play six games just because of the way our schedule had worked out so far with weather and having to postpone games like we needed a week like that to finally get into some rhythm and make it feel like an actual week of baseball we're actually a normal summer that's what weeks kind of look like you know so it was a really good week for us and and our guys were pumped about it at the end of the week and felt good about it and we need to use it moving forward here well I tell you what anytime I know when you get into a double header setting you're such a competitor that you're going to tell me went we're going for two if we get one okay but I really want two you split both your double headers though Charlie to me that's a great week did you feel pretty good about it yeah you feel better about it you know when you split the when you win the second game in a split I think you know we do feel like those are both games that you know got away from us in games that we could have should have won but you know that's the way things go so always you know you're always wanting more you're not satisfied but yeah I think you definitely feel better about it when you when you're able to bounce back and and grab that second game I don't think we've even properly talked about this either but besides the fact that you went four and two last week Charlie you played four games on the road I mean your double header I know was you know one's a home team one's an away team but you're still playing at Adele you were at Webster City and you ended up being at Winterset which wasn't a neutral site game due to the the unfortunate rain out at Field of Dreams so I mean Charlie I guess that's another nice thing too you went three and one on the road last week yeah well we're kind of used to being on the road right now the way things worked out with our schedule you know and and I don't know a little bit more balanced there between the weeks home and away it's definitely something to take a look at and see what we can do better about things that way as far as coaching goes road games are much easier because you don't have to do any field prep before the game or in the tween games so maybe you know from a coaching standpoint you're you're a little bit more in tune to the actual game instead of all the other extra duties that come with being a baseball coach the funny thing about our double headers in our conference though if you are the road team you are the visiting team both games if you're the home team to the home team both games and so there is no flipping that way but between the double headers but that's how that's how the Recklin River does that no other conferences they'll do a you know one team's home one team's visitor for the double headers well and you got another nice non-conference win too and I don't want to let this get away but the victory at Webster City I thought on on Friday night Charlie that's just a beautiful way to cap off a week you put up nine runs on the road too that makes you feel pretty darn good right you know and that's a team that's been playing really well they were 13 and two heading into that game they beat Humboldt twice on Monday you know they got a big win over Ballard really early in the season there you know and so we knew Webster City had a good team and you know that's definitely a game that we want to get as far as you know comes down to postseason seeding like having a win over a team that's 13 and two I think is important for us well I'm going to start with something else that was disappointing I don't want to call it negative but disappointing for sure and it happened last week against ADM Charlie and unfortunately going to have a Hendricks Mormon that's going to be out of the lineup for hopefully just a couple of weeks hopefully we get him back in July but can you tell us just a little bit about Hendricks and what happened last week yeah so uh in the double header against ADM put on a basic bunt just trying to get something going trying to get a rally started you know for the game and Hendricks he's a really good runner and just an unfortunate pitch that kind of ran up and in on him and drilled him in his throwing hand and so I didn't even realize it it had happened I've seen him behind the dugout in the in the area outside the field to play playing catches someone I'm like why is Hendricks throwing right now like he's not available to pitch what's going on and you know the any men's and I run men towards the dugout and assistant coach Quentin Wilson meets me age can't go what do you mean you know and um turns out he got hit in the hand really hard end up uh taking him in uh to the ER getting x-rays got a small fracture in his hand and then you know he hustles back and gets to the game with about three outs to go and in the second game of that double header and that's when we got the news that you know it's it's going to be a little bit of time here with that small fracture and hoping to get him back before the end of our season but you know he's a guy that just he does everything for us as far as you know his leadership right his attention to detail how much he cares about things how good of a teammate he is um he's an extremely solid second baseman and baseball IQ off the charts and you know it's thanks for us uh but you know age is uh he's a really good teammate and he can still do a lot of those things for us by being in our dugout and being there to support our team and our guys and you know for every single guy that's on our roster you know I think it's just uh you know something they can they can check in on here right like when things aren't going well for them well you know I am still healthy I am still playing you know and um you know it's something that can be a motivating thing for them you know so when they want to be poutier in the dumps because of one AB or one bad play or whatever you know like hey remember like this thing can go real quick from you here and be taken from you so um you know move on to what next pitch and and uh you know age can be there to remind them of that pretty pretty easily I got a feeling Charlie he's going to be a coach someday anyway so I think he'll be able to help you guys on the bench quite a bit and yeah yeah we still got season to go so you know my fingers are going to be crossing the chance to see him out on that diamond before we wrap her up this year so yeah yeah uh Charlie bid week we got a double header against Carol coming up today man I tell you what to I don't know what you did with this weather forecast this week but it looks fantastic uh two-to-day versus Carol you got Northpoke that'll be coming to town uh later this week uh a big one at Ballard Prongy's coming up this weekend too with West Marshall and moc Floyd Valley I mean another week Charlie I know you're excited about I'm I'm reading all these games and you're excited about it I'm sure the parents are thinking holy cow we're going to be all over the diamond but you know what this time of the year I guess that's what we're doing right yeah and and that's kind of what it is right this time in June like we want to be at the ballpark every night and we're pumped up for for another loaded week and you know uh boy by the end of the week there are our dugout really really brought the juice and we're going to need that again here and I had seen a guy's had as much fun as they did on Friday and so we need to bring that here on Monday and carry it out to the week Charlie as always thank you so much for some time best of luck against Carroll today we'll see you for North Pole coming up on Wednesday all right thanks Ryan you bet Charlie Easton again joining us boon baseball here in coaches corner
