Transcript

with us on coaches corner. KWB G get a chance to put a wrap on a boom boys golf season. Lance Johnson joining us as a Torre doors and I asked coach this off air and so we'll kind of invite everybody into what we're talking about off air but I always ask coaches okay what do you think good season average season you know where we're at this year Lance I thought it was a very good season I think you're kind of on par with me no pun intended. Yeah absolutely um you know you look at just kind of going through our our record book and our stat book and the career summary that all these kids have we uh we made some tremendous growth as a program so definitely a good season for us um didn't end up you know where we wanted to in the grand scheme of things but um compared to kind of where we were a couple of years ago to where we are now we had a very good season. I was looking back at some of the kids and what you were able to do this past year. Lance the the number one thing that I kept looking at when I was kind of paying attention to each uh you know meet results you were competitive with not just the teams you were playing but your competition within team it might have been the best I've seen in you know quite a few years. Yeah absolutely um this was the deepest team that we've had in three years and it always felt like our lineup could kind of change it at any point and that's something that you definitely want to have as a as a coach we would always have kind of qualifying rounds in the middle of the week and our lineup might change or the lineup might stay the same depending on on how that shook out so yeah this was our our deepest team um for sure and I think it's going to stay that way for a little while because uh we've had a pretty young roster. Well I was looking back to I thought Jackson my over had obviously a fantastic season for you I thought Brody and Calvin I feel like I can just keep going names-wise the improvement what did you see improvement wise uh lands from the first time you guys got outside to when you finished up at sectionals? Yeah I think you know the biggest thing was these these kids started to learn what being a golfer is about you know coach Sandvik and I talked about there's a difference between being a golfer and playing golf um they started to figure out what it what it takes to be a be a golfer and what what that practice kind of looks like and you know middle of the year once we kind of found out um who are who our top group was going to be uh we really grinded some of our practices and um I remember specifically we had one practice where they they had a putting drill they had to do and it took a couple of those kids like an hour and a half to finish that drill wow you know and and I told those kids and like you became a better golfer today um by being able to do that so yeah we really we really worked on on some of those things and I think the biggest takeaway from this year was they just learned that this is what this is what high school golf or a competitive high school golf um should look like. Lance we always but besides improving individually always like to get listen we like to get a little rewards here and there you guys had some triangular victories this year you had a runner-up finish at Colfax Mingo there were numerous other meets that I was looking back and I'm like man they were right there you know if a couple of kids do this and I know what it could have showed us in hand grenades and all that but I mean there were some meets too Lance that we probably could have added to that list which makes me wonder what kind of goals do we set for 20 27 yeah no doubt um that was kind of that was kind of our theme for this year's just kind of being able to to finish off um some of those rounds I keep keep stats of every kids hole by hole and you know we had a lot of meets where we were in really good shape and we might have finished with four bogeys in the last three holes and that took us from first to second or second to third um no doubt our goal from for next year is I mean we want to get into the state tournament um there's no reason we we can't do that um but high school golf in Iowa is extremely extremely good and talented right now so you know it's a lofty goal but it's something that I think is definitely attainable for our guys and um you know that's just kind of the mindset that we've we've got to have going forward is you know we want to have fun out here but we're also trying to do things um that haven't been done in boon in a very long time well something else you're able to do this year too Lance can you just kind of talk about your your 18 hole scoring average I know I saw you had posted those stats uh in early May and and what I thought was impressive was just where your average score is this year compared to the last couple years yeah absolutely I think my first year so a couple of years ago we averaged like a three 354 for 18 hole meets and I think we got down that down to like a 333 this year so we're making a we're making a ton of growth and um going forward I'm going to try and set up our schedule where we really have a 18 hole focus because that's what it comes down to you know in our conference meet and in the postseason so yeah we we've made a ton of growth and especially for those kids to play in those 18 hole meets and understand you know you're out there kind of by yourself for five or six hours and that's a really difficult thing to do um compared to those nine hole meets you know you take a look at our excuse me our nine hole averages and we average like a 155 um which is really really good golf you know that's that's four guys shooting under 40 but right you know then that that 18 hole average was a little bit higher than that so the name of the game is you know consistency and who can stay consistent the longest but yeah we did um we did some really nice things and a couple of our 18 hole meets lands final thing your numbers were so good this year that uh you had to coax uh Steve Sandvig to kind of come out and and help you guys a little bit to me it looks like we're trending that way for the next few years is that going to be something where maybe you have to get some JV only meets too yeah that's the plan um in a perfect world our varsity schedule is just 18 hole 18 hole only meets um but then you can only take six guys and if we've got a roster of over 30 the only way to build depth is to get those guys and those JV meets and we went over to Gilbert this year and got into an 18 hole JV meet and um yeah we're gonna have to fill that schedule each kid can play 12 meets so we're gonna try and fill that schedule with a bunch of JV meets and try and host some JV meets as well and uh get into a couple of 18 hole meets for those guys to continue to build depth for our program Lance want to thank you again for all the results thanks again for all the coaches corners this past year was a ton of fun this spring once the weather started to uh commit and be nice to us looking forward to 2027 thank you again yep absolutely Lance Johnson and joining us boon boys golf here on coaches corner
