Coaches Corner for March 23rd: Tony Cosentino, Boone Boys Track

KWBG 03/23/26

Transcript

with us on Coach's Corner here on K to B B G. Going to talk some boomboys track is Tony Cosentino joins us. Tori doors had a chance to go to and I'm using air quotes.

So this doesn't work on radio very well, but had a chance to go to the Central College indoor as again, I'm using air quotes because Tony, you guys had some crazy weather here last week that actually had a bunch of coaches.

And I'm sure you were probably one of them, too, that were like kids talking to their mom and dad saying, Hey, can we go outside? Because apparently, Coach, that's what you were able to do last week, huh?

Yeah, I got a pretty along me and along with others from our squad at the pretty good sunburned on Friday. You know, we were thinking the whole thing was supposed to be low, but I don't think so because a lot of kids that had to apply elevator later because it was beautiful.

You know, we're like, oh, we don't need our you know, go ahead and get all candid wire down there. It was pretty hot. That track at Central was cooking and it was pretty evident when kids were getting blisters. But it was fun to be outside.

It was good to watch like Coach Warrson running corner to corner to get split the kids and he was excited about track. I'm excited about track. The weather just, you know, I thought I had a weather right. Like 80 degrees one week next week and maybe 40.

We enjoyed the meet on Friday and we have some pretty good performances to be pleased about. Well, something else that's always awesome. And I know this is one of the reasons you wanted to go down, go down south was there's a ton of events that have unlimited amounts.

And Tony, I know you guys get a chance to get data every day when it comes to, you know, running on your own track. But boy, to get data like this against other competition. Talk about invaluable stuff here at the end of March. Yeah, you know, it's hard to practice.

You know, you can take sports and I have my own timing system that I use that shoots data, data to my phone and into the school iPad. But but you get really good, you know, data when they're actually all in a beat against competition because they have the adrenaline.

And obviously in practice, it's different. You know, I don't think kids can barely go 100 percent. When you're on your buddies and around the other teams, like with the girls all practicing at the same spot, you know, 100 percent, not really 100 percent.

And if you generally get from the competition next to you and coming out of blocks and we can go back and use this data to kind of kind of figure out who we want to do in our open and our relays for not just for the scrimmage, but for our first meet at Carol, the Carol Colette on Thursday.

So we'll use that information. But it's not like that's not going to stay the same. Obviously, kids are going to get faster and they're going to improve. Blocks will get better, you know, through training. Those times will come down and we'll reevaluate it as we move further.

But those early season meets are so valuable because you can use that data versus having to do it at your own practice. So you know, it's nice that Central was it was that A.A. time you're doing it, so you had live results.

So I was actually filling out my data as they were finishing their races. So that was great. Well, I guess I know you told me we've got a lot of youngsters here this year, a pretty big freshman class.

I know we've got some upperclassmen that are going to kind of help shore that down. Tony, if I said, pick me a strength right now for Boone boys track, where do you think you would go with what you think your strength is? And granted, it is March 23rd.

We're not booking things for for state track yet. But give me a couple of strengths for this team so far. Well, you know, when you you bring back two guys from your distance that that, you know, they were in the final heat, you know, rated seven.

You know, that that makes you really excited to be like, hey, OK, so we lost the two, 200 lakes. Well, there's plenty of possibilities here.

But I would say that distance that you and I were talking out there about how that the 200, you just got to have guys that can stay stay in the race for that distance. But and then the four and eight really matter. So you got that got our four by eight.

If you saw the you saw the central results. We got second there and Braddock coming off, AJ Braddock coming off from, you know, coming off vacation is like Mexico. But I guess he stayed in shape and ran every day, lost the eight. He ran a two on a night split to open up.

And, you know, Calvin Cook, who's been on vacation to 16th, not bad. No, you know, we're in March. And then obviously, Teddy Johnson, who's been a phenomenal freshman to 14. And then that never ran in 800.

That's been doing some over distance training to help with this for if you read a two to 14, they ran under nine minutes. They got second. That was awesome there. You know, throws, you know, dude's been on vacation. He'll be back. You know, got him in the shot.

And you know, I've said this year, man, for, for boys and girls, since I'm doing hurdles for boys and girls, I got a bunch of hurdlers that have a lot of potential, you know, we bring back. Brendan Heidrick, who's a great shuttle hurdler.

He's going to be really good in the high goal at Mason City, previous PR in the high for the 60. He ran 10, 4, 1, that was an adult PR. He ran a 9.5, freesteped all of them, took out hurdle three, took it with him. That's exciting to me.

That's called, you know, that's, it's a barrier. You can, you can touch, you can touch with your foot, but not your hand. You go right at it. Right. And that's what he did. And then I got that video. It's pretty exciting.

Um, you know, you got Gabe, I would say that gave the, gave the Lava in the long jump, you know, at a couple of weeks ago, he participated in the indoor, um, big games of Iowa jump 19 too. So there's a lot of potential there. He's quick as well.

You know, we can, he's him in a relay. Um, high jump. I got Isaac McCloud jumped five eight as a freshman in his first meet. I mean, you should watch him. He can arch his back like a rainbow. It's crazy. He's so flexible and he's no different than his brothers, right?

They're all I've wanted. They're all good runners, all good athletes. And I believe Kyle, their dad was a good athlete as well. You probably know that from all your, from your food history, but he might've had an octane kid. I'm not really sure.

Um, so there's, and then obviously our four by four, you know, last year, our four by four, three, 31 and change just misqualifying most of those guys come back, they like Bodhi Brockton is going to do the shuttle.

You have Dorian Maddox, but then we have like Marcus Cook freshman. You, we have side boss got potential. Jaden Clark. I mean, there's just so many pieces to play around with, but that's the best part about early season track, right? You mix them up. That's post-it.

Yeah, absolutely. Supposed to, I know you just brought up the Ogden scrimmage. What do you look for for that coming up tomorrow, Tony?

I mean, I know again, it's another opportunity to go against other competition, but you also have to kind of start looking toward Thursday, as you said, with that first outdoor meet of the season. So what are you looking for tomorrow at the scrimmage over an Ogden?

You know, so we were talking about this over the weekend. So, you know, we were debating with. Do we, do we need to send all of our kids there? Probably not. Like we already know, like there's no need to send Manic Smack entire, unless you get a long jump, which is not.

So like, we're only going to send kids that we don't have a lot of data on just because they run vacation. Um, you know, we have times currently, uh, obviously of our upperclassmen. So I don't know if they're going to try something that we haven't seen them in.

And I think like, for example, Jayden Clark, he's a senior.

We'll try him in the high jump and maybe a sprint race or two, but mostly our underclassmen that we need times on, even though they're unofficial, you know, even even with a stopwatch, you can get pretty close, at least it gives us an idea.

So that's kind of what we're going with. We're looking, it's kind of tough when you have two beats in a week, cause you're kind of planning for both.

So you kind of have your rough line up for Thursday, cause you don't have to submit to Wednesday night, but you kind of want to see what happens on Tuesday at the Augsburg scrimmage. Well, and it almost kind of feels like to Tony, this is going to be, I don't know.

It's a preview to an extent to Thursday, but you could change things quite a bit from Tuesday to Thursday if you wanted to, right? Yeah, absolutely.

And I do does a nice job of like, you know, it's kind of, they send out a spreadsheet and then they, they have pretty fine lanes and we just kind of fill in who we want. And then obviously we see them float it down and out.

So we don't want a kid that we don't want a kid to get burnt really bad. We want to put them in a heat where they could be competitive because it's, you know, it's like if you go in and go against the kid that runs 10, 90, the only runs 12, that's not great.

So you want to make them kind of fair to get pushed a little bit. So that's what I like about the Agnes scrimmage and it's only like 10 minutes away and we don't, you see a lot of these schools go in two hours away for a scrimmage. There's, yeah, we've already had two meets.

The scrimmage is nice just for like Ogden to kind of plan for when they have their needs to go practice rounds for them. Um, and it's good for us to get our kids in that maybe we haven't seen yet. So very much agreed. So Tony, best of luck coming up tomorrow for that scrimmage.

Best of luck this season. We'll talk again here in a couple of weeks. Sounds good, Ryan. I love talking to you because I know it's track. Right. It is true. I know good letters come in and stuff to look forward to or parent teacher conferences, one of the others.

So this is more fun though. Very true. Tony Cosentino again, joining us Boone boys track here on coaches quarter.
