Coaches Corner for March 26th: Bill Castle, Boone Girls Track

KWBG 03/26/26

Transcript

With us on Coach's Corner here in KWBEG, going to talk some Boone Girls track is Bill Castle joining us. The Tori Dores get ready to kick off the outdoor portion of their season tonight as they'll be over at the Carol Coed.

And Bill, I tell you what, I was really excited to see how you guys competed in the indoor portion of your slate.

I feel like, and I know we've had some real nice individual performances in the past, but I kind of feel like we had a bunch of good individual performances this past spring. And has this been one of your better indoor seasons?

Indoor meet at UNI back on the 10th of March and then two days later, the what they call the Iowa Iowa Association of Track Coaches State Indoor, which is one that you do have to qualify for. So we had some, a number of qualifiers for that from their performances from last year.

We had two or three place winners in that. Jen Lamar placed highly in the shot put. She placed fourth and then Malia Shivers seventh place in the shot put as well. So our throwers are going to be really good this year.

Coach Myers is working and Coach Lomly are working really well with them. We've got a large throwing room, so we've got a lot of throwers out this year, so that's nice to see. And then, you know, we've had some success at the central college indoor meet last Saturday.

Regan Morgan is being really consistent for us in the distance events. So it's great to have her as a freshman, you know, competing in, in anything from the 800 up to the 3000. So everybody's done a good job and is working hard this year. Yeah.

It looked like Finley Houser and, and also you talked about Reagan in, in those events, but boy, she's even been able to kind of pops the eight hundreds for you as well. Coach, it feels like that longer distance slash middle distance.

I don't want to call it a strength, but man, it's starting to really, really improve. I think for you guys this spring. Yeah, definitely. We, we have coach worse than on board this year.

So our girls cross country coach and he's working with the distance runners in, in the boys, boys and girls programs. So got a lot of new kids out in that area. I think it will be a strength for us and most of them are young.

So a lot of freshmen in that group and we look forward to, to continuing to see their progress throughout the year. I'm excited for it. I think they're excited to get the season started in the outdoor today too. Kind of feels like the sprinters as well.

We're starting to, and I know we're definitely, and we'll talk about hurdlers here in just a few as well, because I got that picture sent to me way early into the spring process.

Cause I know somebody was pretty proud about how many hurdlers were out on, on both sides, but coach, it kind of feels like sprinters, not maybe that one stud, but we've got a bunch of girls that are, I think are really going to contribute to this squad this spring. Yeah, we do.

We've got, you know, sprinters from freshmen up to senior that can really contribute. We just need to, you know, to keep getting them faster and working with them. That's a, an event that we've got some newcomers in as well. You know, Abigail Lou or Abby Lou, we call her.

She, she moved from a Newell Fonda. So she's, she's going to contribute as a sophomore newcomer.

And then then our stale, our holdovers, Hallie Bailey, Taylor Aarondale, Maddie Davidson, those people are going to also help us and continue to help us, I guess, I should say in the sprint events.

So looking forward to their continued efforts and continued development in the sprint events. Well, I know I kind of touched on a little bit, but Bill, sounds like we got a bunch of girls that are ready to jump over things too.

Tell me about this large hurdler group that, that seems to be out this spring. Yeah. Coach Cosentino is working with our hurdlers, both on the boys and girls side. And, and we've got quite a few actually, hopefully we can keep them all healthy.

We will be doing shuttle hurdle hopefully consistently this year. We had some troubles with that last year. But yeah, they're really working hard on it. One of the people that is currently in that group was an Alpha Track last year, Tyra Darby.

So she's a good athlete on you know, in other sports. So we want her to be a part of that group. And then some of, and Maylon Griffiths from last year, she's one of our hurdlers from last year. So a couple of newcomers as well.

And we'll continue to work with them and get them, get them to the finish line. So it'll be great to see their progress. Well, tell me a little bit about the scrimmage on Tuesday, Coach. I know, obviously we talked about central, but you also had an opportunity.

I know to go over to Ogden, what did you see from the girls or, or what were you looking for? I guess on Tuesday. Yeah, Tuesday, we took a limited squad over there.

We took mostly some of our athletes who didn't get a chance to do any of the indoor events that we had, any of those first three events. So that gave us some good data to go on on the girls side. So that's kind of what we were looking for from that perspective.

The rest of the rest of the team stayed back and did a good practice. So we've kind of approached that scrimmage in that manner the last couple of years. The field events were good, you know, to try to get first opportunity to see discus for the year at that scrimmage.

So that was good to get those, those athletes there. And then we've got a freshman high jumper, Ainsley Powell. So we're working with her and she competed over there as well as, and she did at the central meet.

Well, there's something that I know you're pretty excited about, Bill, when you look down at your paper and that is a full lineup here tonight, full lineup here tonight, coach.

What's that mean to you to be able to go over to Carol and not say, now they're not going to score in this event or we know no points. We're going to pull up in this one. I mean, you have opportunities to score in every event here this evening. We do. And that's really exciting.

You know, in the past we've had to give up, you know, some scoring opportunities and we're full all 19 events are filled. And I think they're competitive in, you know, most, most all of them.

So looking forward to seeing what we can do with, with, you know, the 800 meters, for example, we've got a couple in the lineup, this couple of freshmen in the lineup, Whitney Chestnut and Finley Houser is running that event today. So I believe they will score in that one.

And then, you know, the 1500 got a couple of kids in there and the 3000. So I mean, a full lineup is good. It's exciting to see and I'm looking forward to the results tonight. Well, and I asked Bill off air, I'll tell on myself a little bit.

I said, Oh, coach, you're going to go at it, you know, a little easier here tonight. You know, this and that. Boy, Bill, forget this whole going at it easier kind of thing.

You guys are like I said, it's all for and we're running this thing like it's a pretty important meet here tonight. Yeah, we want to see what we have. Most kids are are doing multiple events. Some of them three and potentially four. So we want to see where they're at.

You know, looking long term, this is the start, but looking long term. These events matter and you know, just for their conditioning, for their, you know, confidence and things like that going forward. We want to see how they do and and we're looking excited.

We're looking forward to it and we're excited for the results. Bill, as always, thank you so much for some time. We'll look forward to getting those results and having them coming up on Friday morning. Thanks for some time. Have a blast signed over in Carroll.

Well, thank you, Ryan. Appreciate it. Absolutely. Bill Castle again joining us. Boom Girls Track here on Coach's Corner.
