Coaches Corner for March 2nd: Cole Corson, Boone Girls Basketball

KWBG 03/02/26

Transcript

With us on coaches quarter here in KWBG going to talk Boone girls basketball postseason with Cole Corson head coach as the Toreadors fell to Webster City in overtime 42-36 and it was one of those games Cole, I know as we were going through it it felt like nobody wanted to run away and hide in this game and be if you could just make a couple of more shots down the stretch you were gonna be right in this thing, which is exactly what happened.

Yeah Kind of got off to a slow start I think we end up getting down in the first quarter and so then you had to you know climb a little bit back and Gave up a couple chippies early But then we kind of settled in and you know the reality of the situation is it's a district game so it's a little bit different feel to it, whatever and You know Macy was really the only one who?

Returning had you know 15 20 minutes of district experience Maybe Brook had you know that last year at Newton, but then after that it was you know kind of reserve roles Or maybe it's you know five to ten minutes here or there and not necessarily you know in a starter role or Any of those types of things and then you have three younger girls to that It's their first experience.

You know a student section.

You don't get loud and Doing all those things and just the intensity and the overall atmosphere knowing hey, you don't win this one season's over And so I think as we got more comfortable Things started to go more our way, but yeah, just hitting you know an open shot here or there It would have been drastic change to you know, maybe how the second half looks and The outcome of the game, but those are things that you just have to keep working towards and and get better from well You did have one of your best third quarters of the season I know there's been some really good third quarters that I've done it for you guys But to hold Webster City to four points in the third quarter.

I mean defensively you were locked in Maybe not your best offensive quarter with nine, but I mean when you're only down a couple You do a quarter like that all of a sudden Cole We go to the fourth quarter and that's why this thing did get to overtime is because it was tight and you locked it down in the third quarter and That was one of our things at halftime we discussed and coming out of the Huddle for the third quarter was hey just eliminate the lead That's all we're looking to do right here is make it you know a tie game going to the fourth at 0-0 And then it's anybody's ballgame and that's what we did.

You know, we won the quarter by five and Went into the fourth quarter tied and we were wearing on them I think quite a bit just with our pressure and you know, they're limited number of girls that We'd like you said it was a quarter that we needed and we we executed what we needed to do in that quarter Well something else that you executed too was boy you want to talk about active hands that night I've never seen as many steals.

I've never seen as many Tip balls balls knocked out of bounds.

I mean Gosh you guys had the active defense all over I mean, it wasn't just that you know when they crossed half court it was when they were inbound in the ball I mean that was something that I know you wanted to see all season defensively Boy, it came up big that night because I don't think Webster City had any opportunity or even a chance to take a breath in their home court No, and You know realistically that that's how we want games to get especially if you get That's the toughest part of the style that we play is when you don't see shots go in To keep being relentless on defense and we didn't see a lot of shots go in that night But our defense just stayed relentless and force 20 or force 42 turnovers We had 25 steals on the night.

We were you know, we tied our season high at 25 and which is just too off the school record and so It was one of those nights where they had to shoot a really high percentage on the shots that they actually did get off and You know the reality of situation is is they had a presence inside that we couldn't Match height wise she sticks to and she's long that you know If they did break our pressure then they had some law passes available to her that we just couldn't get to just By you know height restrictions and stuff like that and then she made enough shots That's the biggest thing is that if she misses it we're going the other way She has a 90-foot run that she doesn't want to do Instead if you make it then you buy yourself a second and a half before we start our 90-foot run And so yeah, it was just one of those games where they did just enough Piecing together and that's why it kind of those chippies early on that we didn't tip or whatever in the first three minutes And they got you know six early points whatever That's why it's so important that you Start in that and don't have to necessarily build into it And that's something that we got better on as the season progressed are those the toughest locker rooms after way cold afterward Cole when you're That close and you know that you left some stuff out there and you're like gosh dang it I wish we you know we do something here.

We do something here Maybe this thing a is in a double overtime or maybe we're still playing but you know are those the most difficult locker rooms?

when it comes to postseason Yeah, and the thing is happen back-to-back years that You know I knew and I thought we play Really well besides the first maybe five minutes where we got down eight to nothing right?

It's that game and This game kind of a little bit the same way offensively we didn't play as well as what we did against Newton that year but the other part is is You make sure that the other team has to beat you and you know Webster City did enough In their offensive half court when they did break our press and did those things that they did do enough to beat us And so it is hard to Sit there and say man like yeah, if we had this shot of we had this steal or whatever it is But the end of the day like you didn't you don't want to say you beat yourselves, and I don't think we beat ourselves It's just a learning opportunity for us that and we've talked about it If we you know shoot a little bit higher clip here or there like there's four or five six games on our schedule that were like man You shoot five percent better.

Well five percent better might be you know it's the trade-off that we talked about is Are you willing to shoot ten thousand shots to average two points more per game?

Whether that be in JB or varsity whatever if the answer is yes Go do it if the answer is no then we got to figure out Well you know what is it what's in it for you that gets you to that point and a lot of times this is the answer Is if you get enough girls to buy in and say the answer is yes Well you get five six girls that come in and shoot five ten thousand more shots and improve their percentages and improves the point total Now you're starting to you know get up into the mid 40s for points per game and You know that's gonna win you a lot of games especially when you know you play as fast as we want to do and you Do things at a high high intensity you're gonna turn people over and if you're shooting percentage keeps going up more shot attempts Go up Law of averages starts to fill in after that no question cool.

We'll wrap up the season with you here in a couple of weeks Thanks for some time talking postseason Awesome. Thanks Ryan. You bet cool course and again joining us boom girls basketball here in coaches corner
