KWBG 05/12/26

Transcript

With us on coaches corner KWBG, we get a chance to talk some Ogden track today. Maggie Lloyd joining us is a Bulldogs gear and up for Thursdays at State Qualifying Meet. We'll talk more about that here in just a few. Maggie getting the chance though to kind of wind down the regular season now and obviously conference and and then we get into you know our last home meet and then all of a sudden boom it's time to start preparing for State Qualifying Week. How's the how's the squad's feeling right now? Really good. Last week was a really busy week with conference and our home meet. Yesterday we had a smaller meet where our JB kids got an opportunity to compete in probably more events than maybe they're used to so that's always fun for them to end their season that way but yeah last week conference some of our kids are running for events and then you know at our home meet you want the opportunity to compete in front of your home crowd of your classmates your administration your teachers and all that sort of thing so given the kids the opportunity to do that so busy long week I think kids are a little tired so the recovery from yesterday is good and yeah getting ready to gear up for Thursday. All right let's start on the girl side of things Maggie and obviously this was a season where I feel like we had some good leadership. We also had a bunch of young kids though and a bunch of young girls that that I know we'll talk about in season wrap here in a few weeks but it's been to me a really nice and fun season to watch Maggie. Take me inside the girls program same for you. Yeah absolutely I would say about 80% of our girls team right now are underclassmen. We graduated a lot of seniors that contributed to points and relays and that sort of thing last year so a little bit in a rebuilding year but we still have some upperclassmen that have been great leaders and have taken that role and run with it. You know they feel some of those captain roles and the opportunity to sit back and watch them encourage each other and you know push themselves past the limit that they thought they could so yeah we're young but a lot of hard work has been put in. All right so with that kind of a group it's got to be scary but yet fun as heck because you never know what's going to happen with young kids when the lights turn on sometimes they shy away a little bit and sometimes they shock all of us so Thursday Maggie on the girls side of things exciting and terrifying I would guess. Yeah absolutely we've started working on line-ups and kind of moving kids here and there and trying to put them in the best situation possible and yeah there's opportunities there and the kids are just going to have to come out and push themselves and compete really hard. All right so give me your thoughts Maggie because I ask all my track coaches this and I know we talked about this last year but let's kind of revisit a little bit and every year I know it's different too but when you're doing the girls lineup do you just take a fresh lineup sheet put it down and then kind of start tinkering or how do you kind of go about putting together your prelim list. You know we start with the ones that we are we feel strongly has a possibility at qualifying for state and then we work our way backwards. You know we want to prioritize if we feel a certain relay or an open has a higher chance than we start there and then we want to make sure that kids aren't in an event too soon before or too soon after so we always yeah we start at the top and we kind of work our way backwards. All right so do you take the state meet schedule also because you kind of have to that's got to be a little bit in the back of your mind too right even though you want to get there but you also have to kind of look at that too. Yeah absolutely you don't want to put a kid in a situation where yeah maybe it's not back-to-back or anything during the state qualifier but it is back-to-back during the state meet so you have to get into consideration as well. There's just a lot of different things that going to play when you're trying to come up with your state qualifier lineup. I've tried to explain this to parents before Maggie it is the most difficult fun yet difficult thing I think you coaches have to do is once you hit that submit button I'm sure in the back of your mind you're thinking oh crud was this what I wanted to do I mean I feel for you guys this time of year it's tough. It is it's tough and you have to have your alternates already decided so lineups are due tomorrow night already Wednesday night so you have to have your alternates lined up and none of that can be changed once that submit button happens. Oh boy oh boy well let's go to the boys program now Maggie and this has kind of been a little bit of a flip this year man the talent and not that it wasn't there on the girls side or hasn't been on the girls side the talent on the boys side has been really fun to watch you have had some outstanding sprinters you have had some great middle distance and long distance Maggie this has been nearly one of those perfect seasons where you're like okay I'm gonna sit back and just see what some of these relays can do this has got to be fun for you on Tuesdays or Mondays or Thursdays whenever you're running this boys program has been a lot of fun this spring. It really has it's um again we're young but some of our younger kids brought in a lot of talent and we just have that opportunity to try a lot of different things between some opens and some relays we broke in some school records you know on Friday night our boys sprint med broke the school record that was set a couple years ago so that was fun and exciting to do at your home crowd and the first race of the evening to kind of set the tone of what you want that night so yeah we've broken a couple records in relays and it's been fun to kind of move things around and see what the kids are capable of. That's something else and I'm sure is on your mind too Maggie and I'm not going to make you you know jump in the bag of tricks and tell me what's coming up on Thursday but that's got to be something else you got some kids that really can excel in opens but boy they could really make some relays kind of fun too. Yeah they really could so there's going to be a variety of those things come Thursday and some of our ceiling I think is pretty high in a couple of those relays so that'll be really fun to see what what they're able to do. Alright so you obviously had an opportunity to run last night the girls and the boys did on Monday night at ACGC and also at Nevada so practice day today and Wednesday. Maggie what do you got in store here the next couple of days because we're way past conditioning so what do you want to do here the next two days? Yeah so yesterday was pretty low key for our varsity runners who are going to compete a lot Thursday and then today's pretty low key we're going to hand out medals go through our PR board and then talk to our JB kids and what the rest of the week looks like for them and have a light workout and then tomorrow we do a pre-meet day where we work on some flies our blocks and handoffs and we just execute our field events and just mentally prepare and get ready for Thursday. Maggie as always thank you so much for some time always appreciate the results as well best of luck coming up on Thursday. Thank you. You bet Maggie Lloyd again joining us Ogden Track here on Coaches Corner.
