Coaches Corner for October 1st: Shawn Latimer, Boone Girls Tennis

KWBG 10/01/26

Transcript

With us on coaches corner KWBG gonna talk some girls tennis with the Sean Latimer and we kind of got a bunch of stuff to talk about with coach because individual and doubles went down before and we hadn't talked to coach about that yet and and team obviously went down and then a team victory over Atlantic on on Wednesday morning so Sean I don't know where you want to start but you guys have had a lot of a lot of success here the last couple of weeks yeah we've had it we've had a pretty good run I mean it was a very successful individual for us you know no question you know we got through who we we thought we'd get through and I think we were close to getting some others through as well so that was always kind of nice to see not only you know the the seeded ones get through but but everybody else though and then yeah teams been rolling and and we've made pretty good pretty good work of the two teams that we've had to play and and one more to qualify for state so we are you know hopefully looking forward to that on Saturday well Sean you've had to pivot a little bit and I just kind of wanted you to explain and I know we've talked about this many many years ago I'm sure but I think it's good to revisit can you kind of explain the differences when you talk about playing outdoors to when you guys have had to pivot to go inside the Iowa State bubble yeah it's you know it's pretty interesting because the advantage that we do have is a lot of our girls do play in the bubble during the offseason in the winter so I mean they're used to the conditions there and the conditions inside can be great because there's no wind or sun but some days it could be a hundred and twenty in there like it was versus Pella and you know the other day we played in there was a little chilly because it was cold outside because there's it's not a really temperature regulated bubble so that's you know it's interesting the different and and this morning it was a little bit muggy and humid in there so it was another kind of it wasn't as hot as it was when we played Pella but it was still you know not cool in there so yeah it's a lot of difference in there and you know we still love playing in mccow is I mean I it's one of the best tennis venues in the in the state and our girls feel real comfortable there so you know hopefully Saturday looks like the weather's gonna change here we're gonna see some sun for a while and and that'll be nice to be able to play that in mccows on Saturday I know whenever you go to single an individual you're hoping I want to get a single in I want to get my doubles team as well coach you felt confident there might have been a chance even to get somebody else in too yeah you know we we we felt that you know we definitely had the right matchups we were and you know just unfortunate with Claire you know she pulled up a little bit of cramping in that in that second set right you know I think she might have ended up making it because I you know I think she matched up pretty well in the semifinals against the two-seed you know she was the three-seed so you know just an unfortunate there and that you know things like that unfortunately just happened and I'll tell you what my other doubles team you know we're at 4-4 in the second set against the baller team that ended up getting runner-up so I mean they you know they're a point or two here from forcing a third set against them and who knows maybe they're the ones that you know end up making it to state as well so you know even though we only got the three through it you know our other three really had a great showing that day Shawn when you have to change things up then really quick and you're and you're going obviously with individual and doubles and and you know that that is like what it sounds like you want your doubles team to obviously go as far as it can same with an individual then you got to go back to team state is there much when it comes to kind of getting the girls ready for for team postseason it is and it isn't you know one of the biggest thing that it's practice time to a lot of it you know what do we focus on do we focus on our singles we focus on the individual for the singles and the double foot you know sometimes the focus is a little bit different on on what you work on in practice but I you know I think at the end of the day they you know we're really a strong singles team you know for the most part so we you know like to focus a little bit more on that if we get done in singles then we don't have to worry about doubles but you know this year you know some of our doubles results have looked outstanding as well so you know we feel like up and down the lineup we've got a pretty good shot well let's talk about round number one in a pretty pretty dominant fashion coach I mean anytime you're able to get you know Kemper who has been known for having good tennis over the years and I know again you had to pivot to Iowa State but a 5-0 victory that day coach you had to feel pretty good walking out of there because I heard that was a pretty quick day yeah you know anytime you can win a match in under an hour you know you're usually pretty happy with walking out of there and we played pretty well that day and you know my even had a pretty good match up the their number one is gonna be the four seed here for the state tournament so I mean she's a pretty good player so it's good for Maya to see her and get to play her and you know her match didn't get finished because everybody else finished so fast but you know it was a good match for Maya you know she was up a set and gonna cruise but you know it's nice for her to see that type of competition as well and team well and then you get to and it's always interesting to me because there's not a ton of time during the school year you guys play on Wednesdays it's mostly it can be scattered throughout the week so I knew when you had a chance to play Wednesday and obviously it had been pretty wet this week and so it looked like probably the I was a little bubble-licious shall we say a chance to get into Iowa State again but and then you get it you know Southwest Iowa you never quite know and Atlanta comes to town they had had a pretty fantastic season oh by the way ten and one and coach less than an hour I mean that's pretty dominant by the ladies yeah you just never know you know when they're ten and one and you look at some of the results you're like well you know they're pretty good team and they were a pretty good team I mean they definitely were deserving of their ten and one record there's no question about that and you know we just came out we continue to play well and you know we seem to jump out in singles and never look back and we did a really nice job again today at just you know taking care of business and under an hour and then we're moving on again well and you get a chance to to play on Saturday and obviously weather's not going to be great here getting up until then although looks like finally some sunshine by Friday and Saturday Sean what do you do this time of year as you're getting this close I know you want to keep them fresh but yet hey we got to get on the court we need to keep the the muscle memory going what do you kind of do here the next couple days yeah you know the body is the biggest thing that they've got to take care of and we talked about you know the importance of you know rest eating bananas you know drinking plenty of fluids getting you know good fluids in yeah you know and we talk a lot about that and our practices we do tend to be a little bit lighter you know towards the end of the season you know instead of going for the hour and a half or whatever we try and get in for an hour and you know get some get some quality hits in and then you know just kind of stay loose a little bit but yeah this point of the season you know the body is more important probably than then you know any amazing practice you're gonna come up with you know they they need to be fresh and you know that's always kind of been my philosophy that you know you get to this time of the year you really got to try and do whatever you can to keep them fresh and energy up and and going from there I know they've been on such a great role Sean but were they a little excited to play for another regional championship yeah yeah absolutely yeah we're you know it's a little different this year you know I think you know last year we were off you know so awestruck that we were there we made it and this year I think there's a little bit different edge on them you can tell that you know just getting there's not gonna be the goal this year I think we're gonna we want to go farther than we did last year so that's kind of you can kind of see it in them that they that they know that we've got some bigger goals ahead for us. Sean as always thank you so much for some time best of luck coming up on Saturday and then individual and doubles as well next week. All right thank you. You bet Sean Lattimer again joining us Boom Girls Tennis here on Coaches Corner.
