Coaches Corner for October 21st: Hannah Vial, Madrid Volleyball

KWBG 10/21/26

Transcript

And joining us on coach's corner here on KWBG, get a chance to talk Madrid Volleyball today with head coach Hannah Vile. Boy, I tell you what Hannah, what a fantastic, and I know coach, we don't ever wanna walk away with a loss, but what a great competition between you and South Central Calhoun on Monday. The energy in the gym was fantastic. Hannah, I really thought the girls brought some of their best volleyball that night. I did too, it was a great game, a great venue. South Central Calhoun is a really good team. Some of the rallies were just insane going back and forth for that long, but yeah, I mean, I was super happy with the game that they played, especially defensively and just being solid. Well, and it's tough when I look back because there wasn't one point that I look back and I say, gosh, if they could have just done this or if this could have happened, it was just an all-around good night and I tip my cap to South Central Calhoun. That's a strong team, but boy, you guys did not make it easy on them. No, we were super proud. Yeah, they had some strong hitters, so the watches played that well defensively and keep up with that. Lisa, I was super happy with it. Well, and I was looking back too at stats and I knew that Jalen Isla had really strong nights. I didn't realize Isla had that strong of a night. I mean, here's a girl who comes in, coach, she gets 10 kills for you. She also has 36 digs as well. Hannah, that's a heck of a night. Yeah, I mean, it's hard to get even sometimes 10 digs a night, but to be all over the floor like that and we kind of had a game plan coming in of where we knew they would hit and Savannah did a great job in that back spot too and I'm just super happy for her. Second set, easily one of the most pressure spots when you lose a first set, you start kind of know, especially seniors, feel a little bit of pressure. I thought you guys played some of your best volleyball in that second set though. Yes, that is one area where I think I've seen a lot of growth this year is with pressure and handling situations like that. And yeah, they fought hard and it was awesome to see them do that in that second set. Well, what else was great too, Hannah, is we're coming down the tail end of second set and South Central Calhoun is pushing ahead and all of a sudden it kind of feels like momentum has come to them. And you guys took momentum away from a spot that I know has been a big emphasis for you. Hannah, tell me about the serving because that was key for you guys on Monday night to keep this a close match. Yeah, I think we've just been in situations this year, like playing more tighter matches and having those scenarios where they've had to get used to the pressure and play with it. And then those moments, they come back like Abby, I can't tell you how many times Abby this season has been up to serve and has started to brought that momentum back with aces or just being clutched back at the service line. So I mean, you just have to experience it to be able to do it. Well, and Hadley-Mickle stepped up in a tough situation anyway. Anytime you're trying to serve for set point, that's never easy, but when you battle back like that and to watch Hadley come up their coach and get back-to-back serves and really hard serves too for South Central Calhoun to do anything with, then all of a sudden you get a win, coach. You're moving on to the third set and you're tied up at one. Yeah, Hadley has been still consistent and just great. I know on senior night, I think she served 22, serves no errors. So when she goes back at that line, I know everyone feels good about it, so. 91.4%, Hannah, that, I know, again, I know we're talking like we got a victory here and I know that the season came to an end, but man, there were so many positives. That's gotta be one that you put a big star around and look forward to reminding them about this next season. Oh, absolutely, if you can't serve or pass, you know, it's hard to do anything else and I feel like we did a really good job doing both of those things. Hannah, nobody ever practices the post-match chat when you lose and those are always kind of the tough conversations. I know I saw a few tears, but I saw a lot of smiles where the girls, even the seniors, pretty excited with at least how they wrapped up a career when it came to that last match. Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, like I said, their impact has been huge on the program and just developing it and building it. I think those will be six that are remembered for a long time. And then, you know, just for Ryland to break the school record and the assist, I think they were just so happy for her too to see her reach that achievement, so. Well, it's one of those that is, like I said, it's a weird loss because I'm sitting here looking at all these stats and all this great stuff that happened and unfortunately the season comes to an end, but Hannah, I know you were really proud overall on how things went down on Monday night. Oh, absolutely. It's never easy to go play as somebody else for a regional game and then know, even that, you know, Woodward Grangers, the next step, if we move on from Monday, but I think they handled it really well. Yeah, played extremely well. Just played hard. Yeah, no doubt they did. Coach, as always, thank you so much for some time. We will wrap up the season with you here in a couple of weeks. Awesome, thank you. You bet, Hannah Weiligan joining us. Matt from Volleyball here on Coach's Corner.
