BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council this week approved a lease agreement that will allow the Iowa National Guard to more than triple it’s current 35,000 square foot facility.
Luke Slings, Installation Geospatial Information and Services Manager for the Iowa Army National Guard, said the existing facility was “constructed more than 30 years ago, it’s starting to show its age and it’s unable to accommodate the missions that we’d like to have here.”
The Boone Airport Commission has been involved with the negotiations for several months. The State of Iowa’s Armory Board intend to construct an aviation support facility and associated improvements on a parcel of land south of the intersection of runway 33/15 and 20/2 that is currently owned by the city and airport commission.
Slings said the larger facility will allow the National Guard to add to the number of aircraft and employees. According to the agreement, the new facilities will be constructed in phases as state and federal funds become available.
