BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council has identified about a half dozen goals they want to prioritize in the next fiscal year. Boone City Administrator Bill Skare began the Council’s Special Meeting on Tuesday with a quick review of goals for the current fiscal year which did include the restoration of the School Resource Officer program. That goal has been met. Other’s that remain are longer term and will continue. Downtown revitalization is included and working on digital marketing which is already in the works.
In the coming year, priorities will include a continuation of the demolition and nuisance abatement efforts. The Council has also put a priority on beginning the planning process for a Story Street resurfacing project.
The Council has also directed staff to begin planning for the establishment of an Economic Development position on city staff. Staff will also begin putting together a Storm Water Utility rate study. The current Storm Water Utility rate was established following flooding in 1993. Neighboring communities have rates that vary from $3.00 to $4.00 or more.
There was also discussion of continuing participation with the Boone County Hospital for ambulance service. The most recent discussion has been about the reimbursement the city receives for providing 3rd call coverage. The Hospital Board is expected to also discuss the matter when they meet this week.
There was discussion about the Community/Wellness Center, but it was not specifically included in any council goals. Committee members are expected to continue working on plans and still say that more work needs to be completed before any possible project could be brought to the full council.
