BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County Zoning Commission has recommended approval of two conditional use permits and recommended not approving a third. The actions followed hearings during the regular meeting of Boone County Zoning Monday.
The most controversial was a request for a Conditional Use Permit to locate what county staff referred to a camp ground with six one bedroom cabins and one two bedroom cabin to be located on property at 1296 166th Drive north of Boone. 166th Drive is the gravel road that leads to the Y Camp north of Boone.
Mike Wifler and his wife are proposing what they call a Micro Resort, offering small, secluded cabins. Opposition to the project was voiced by many neighbors, siting multiple concerns from the traffic, to hunting, to the development affecting the rural setting. The Zoning Commission did have a split vote, 5-to-3, to not recommend approval of the permit.
Meanwhile, the Commission did recommend approval of two Conditional Use Permits, one from Boone County to locate a communications tower on the Boone County Conservation ground on the east side of the Don Williams Recreational Area. This is the proposed Public Safety Communications tower that will replace the existing antenna on the Landus Elevator in Boxholm. The second Conditional Use Permit is for Joni Miller to allow for the construction of portable storage buildings at 2415 Boone Street, north of Boone and just outside the city limits.
All Conditional use recommendations will go the Boone County Zoning Board of Adjustment and will be considered when they meeting Thursday afternoon at 5:30 in the 4th floor conference room at the Boone County Courthouse.
