Dan McMullan

BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for 70 year old Dan McMullan who passed away at his home in Moingona, Iowa on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.  Dan was born on April 19, 1950, in Fort Riley, Kansas to Patrick and Jane (Scheerer) McMullan.

Dan attended Boone High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1968. He excelled in wrestling when the program first started in Boone. After graduation he attended Buena Vista University, wrestling for BVU, and was in the Delta Phi Rho fraternity. Dan then joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1970 to 1976, serving in Vietnam in 1972. He then was in the Marine Reserves until receiving an honorable discharge in 1976. Dan worked in the printing department of the LA Times from 1974 until 1981. While he was living in California, Dan also obtained his private pilot’s license. After returning to Boone in 1981, he worked at Caffrey Wholesale Company until his retirement in 2015.

Dan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was past President of the Boone Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition Award recipient. Dan was also chairman for Pufferbilly Days in the late 1990’s. Traveling and making numerous worldwide trips were some of his fondest memories. He was very active and enjoyed fishing, golfing, biking, working out with his buddies, and target shooting with his cousin, Bob. Dan was proud of his Irish heritage and was especially happy to locate his McMullan relatives in Northern Ireland. He enjoyed spending time with his friends who meant so much to him.

Dan is preceded in death by his father: Patrick J. McMullan; mother: Jane Caffrey; stepfather Joe Caffrey; an infant sister Mary; and his four-legged furry friend Bridget.

Dan is survived by his brothers: Kelly (Marcy) McMullan of Polk City, IA; John Caffrey of Des Moines, IA and Jim Caffrey of Boone, IA; sister-cousin Kathy (Bob) Barry of Solon, IA; nephew Mike (Evan) McMullan and great-niece Marion McMullan all of Norwalk, IA; niece Mary McMullan of Columbus, OH; cousin Michele McMullan of Cedar Rapids, IA; cousin Samantha (Nick & Elizabeth) of Cedar Rapids, IA and numerous other relatives as well as many good friends.

Memorials in Dan’s name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone or the Boone VFW Post 817. Memorials may be sent in care of Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 116, Boone, Iowa 50036.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2020, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Herman Park Pavilion, 621 South Greene Street, Boone, Iowa. A private family Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and burial at Linwood Cemetery will take place at a later date.
