BOONE, Iowa—Donald Gene Prokop, 87, of Boone, Iowa passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, September 18, 2022. Don was born on August 4, 1935 to John and Katarina (Mikulka) Prokop of Callender, IA. Don graduated from Callender High School in 1953, where he participated in basketball and Legion Baseball.
He was married to Pauline Jean Rusnak from 1957 until their separation in 1995 and together they had five children. Don moved his family to Boone in 1968 to begin his plumbing career at Kruck Plumbing & Heating. He then joined the Boone County Hospital in the engineering department and retired from there in 2002.
He was most proud of his family. His children will remember their dad as loving, hardworking, self-less and humble. He was also witty with a huge sense of humor.
You could always find Don outdoors helping on the family farm or attending his family’s sporting events. His favorite past times included watching Maury or Judge Judy and burning wood in his backyard chimney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his children, Vicki (Lou) Greco of Boone, Kris (Jody) Rusnak of Plattsmouth, NE, Sandy (Jay) Wisecup of Sergeant Bluff, Teresa (Curt) Trowbridge of Boone and Mark (Staci) Prokop of Boone; grandchildren, Carrie (Brad) Bristle, Ryan (Christine) Greco, Emily (Brian) Popkes, Thomas Wisecup, Abby Wisecup, Jordan Trowbridge, Cole Trowbridge, Paige Prokop, Derek Prokop; step granddaughters, Jenny Warrick and Sarah Eastlund; along with eight great grandchildren, Macy, Hallie, Dillion, Tinley, Kinsley, Emmerson, Alia and Charlie. Don is also survived by his long-time companion Debbie Svaleson.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Suncrest Home Health and Hospice for the care and support given to Don and his family.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets. A private family inurnment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
