BOONE, Iowa—The 2018 Dragoon River Romp is being cancelled. A statement from Boone County Landfill Administrator Lois Powers, today says that discussions were held with Seven Oaks and the team from the Boone County Landfill, and it was felt that it would better to cancel this year’s event which was scheduled for Saturday, September 15th.
Powers says that the weather has been the determining factor. Heavy rain to the north is expected to keep river levels abnormally high for this time of the year. Powers says there is no chance to be able to safely get on the water for the Romp. Locally, rain has affected the areas where volunteers would approach the river by land for clean up.
The Dragoon River Romp has been an award winning effort by volunteers, working with Keep Boone County Beautiful through the Boone County Landfill and Seven Oaks, to remove debris and litter from the Des Moines River in Boone County. Powers says sponsors of the event will be notified of the decision. Plans do call for the Romp to return in 2019.
