Elizabeth Haberer

KWBG 09/06/24

BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for Elizabeth “Betsy” Haberer.

Born Elizabeth Marie McGrane in Des Moines, Iowa, March 12, 1935, to Bert and Veronica (Rhody) McGrane.

Betsy attended St. Joseph Academy and the Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked in the OB department at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, and continued nursing at Ledges Manor in Boone, as well as private and respite care nursing, and many summers as camp nurse at O’Brien’s Ranch in Boone.

Betsy met Chuck Haberer at a dance where he caught her eye. On June 7, 1958, the pair was the very first couple to be married at Holy Trinity Church in Des Moines. The couple moved to their farm in Boone, where they made their home for over 60 years.

Betsy loved traveling to visit her kids and grandkids, playing cards, and cherished time with friends. Betsy and Chuck enjoyed many trips throughout the U.S. She celebrated her Irish heritage, and was delighted to visit Ireland with her sister Mimi. She was a magnetic personality: drawing people to her beautiful smile and welcoming spirit. She was the most loving Mom and Grandma, showering each of us with affection, encouragement, and love. Betsy embraced her devout Catholic faith. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone, where she belonged to the Altar Society.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Veronica McGrane, sister Mimi Martin, brothers Mike, Bill, and Marty McGrane, and great-granddaughter Emma Riordan.

She is survived by her loving husband Chuck Haberer, her children Sue (Haberer Hall) Harber and her husband Michael, Anne (Haberer) Riordan, Charlie Haberer and his wife Sally Moffet, Tom Haberer and his wife Julie, Jim Haberer and his wife Melissa, Julia Haberer, and Teresa Haberer. Her grandchildren, Sarah, Lyssa, Jordan, Noah, Jesse, Amalia, Mei, Tai, Mathew, Alex, Justin, Amanda, Aubry, Aric, Wylan, Owen, Andrew, Ethan, and 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will continue to carry on her memory.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, September 9, 2024, at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 915 12th Street, Boone.  Burial will be in Bass Point Cemetery, Boone.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.  Online condolences may be left to Betsy’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
