Our guest on our program today from Boone Flax, we have Emily Jurgensen, one of the owners. Emily, thanks for coming and joining us again. Thanks for having us. She was back, she was here earlier with Evan, and today joining us we have Tyler.
Tyler Holmes is your executive director now. That's correct, we're really glad to have Tyler on board.
We've said it before, but Evan and I aren't necessarily gym goers or athletic people ourselves, so having Tyler in our back pocket to help with all of those things, choosing equipment, coming up with programming and classes has been a huge help, and we're excited to introduce him to everybody.
For those that were around when we first did the ribbon cutting or started on this, seems like it was a little while ago. Coming up on a year, I think it was March 14th last year, I want to say. Something like that, we got started and Tyler's been there since.
Kind of what, just seeing how things are coming together, what have you been doing in the interim? Because I know part of your responsibility was we need to get some equipment, we need to do things. What are we going to put together as far as programming and things like that?
We'll start a little bit with how long, because you do have some background in this. Yes, yes.
So I've been on the personal side, been exercising consistently for the past five years, and in addition to that, I've worked at an Anytime Fitness as a manager for two years when I lived out in Washington State.
I really enjoyed it, building that community up and enjoyed the people. Okay, so Challenger, laying things out for their facility altogether and fitting into their business plan, that's a whole new challenge for you? It is, yeah. I mean, it aligns with what I went to school for.
I went for business management, so I get to utilize that degree, which I'm happy about. But yeah, I've been busy making policies, procedures, staffing. Recently got all of our staff compiled and building the list for equipment and grouping. Okay, getting ready.
Well, let's talk a little bit about, first of all, opening the first. I saw the... See, you guys have been keeping updates. Now, again, not... I mean, you've got a lot of it that's been redone and will be opened up, but you also have work that's going to continue.
Yeah, so the plan is for April 1st. Almost everything will be open except for the pool is really the short story that includes some event space that you could reserve.
So we're going to start promoting pretty soon if you still need a place to host your grad party, don't want to clean out the garage. We've got room for you, as well as a couple of suites for lease.
So someone like a massage therapist, a counselor, nutritionist, someone kind of health and wellness minded could rent that space from us and will benefit from each other's foot traffic. We'll have a room dedicated to teenagers.
We had worked with some of the EDGE students in the fall semester to select amenities that the kids want to see, kind of the vibe and the furniture that they want in that space.
We'll have, of course, the locker rooms, shower rooms, the gymnasium, the walking track, spin studio, a place structure for the kids. That should be delivering here next week.
So we're really excited to see that come together, as well as the weight and cardio floor and then a large turf room. That leaves us with about 7,000 square feet in the basement that we don't have a plan for at this time.
So as we get a better feel for what people are interested in, what we want to see more of, perhaps we can grow into that space and then the pool will be a later project. You got quite a variety of things in there. Yes.
For in the weight room, we have a split between weights and cardio and then a whole separate area for a turf that will have functional fitness over there.
And so in the weights room, we'll have a variety of cardio equipment ranging from treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, a stair master. We'll have a wide variety of selectorizing machines and then a free weights section as well. And then functional fitness on the turf side. Okay.
Some of the basics I know people are going to say, what about spinning? We're having to, well, we have a spin class as well. We have, and how are they going to be handled that? Because I know you mentioned that you've got a massage there, a sore somebody wanted to have a space.
They could secure a space, but they would rent that from. That's correct. So a couple of different approaches. We have spaces that you could lease from us for your own business, hoping to benefit from each other's foot traffic. We could also share some reception services as well.
If one of our members wanted to book your service separately, we have our group fitness classes that could be like yoga, hit the spin that Jim was just mentioning. And those will be instructors that are independent contractors who hire you 1099 to provide those services.
So you'll be paid by the hour for the classes that you provide. And Tyler can tell you a little more about what we're going to offer there. You've got some of that. That's part of what you had to put together and get all lined up. So tell us a little bit how this is working.
Yeah. So we're going to open up initially with a few classes, about seven of them. And then if we can get those classes full consistently, we'll grow from there.
But to start it off, we'll have yoga, hit slash conditioning, beginners slash functional strength training, spin, dance, core and mobility slash recovery, and then a family and youth fitness for parents to bring their little ones in and have their kids run around while they're also exercising.
OK. So if anyone listening is interested in instructing a class or know someone who would be great at that, please send them our way. And we'll get you in contact with Tyler. So and then let's talk a little bit about because you mentioned bring the kids in.
Childcare, that was one thing that you really had targeted high preliminary. And again, a lot of people keep asking about that because what do I do with my kids? Can I just drop them off? How's that going to work? Yep.
So we'll have two different locations that we'll be hosting Child Watch Out of. One will be the play structure room and the other will be on the other half of the turf room in the basement where the kids will have turf and equipment to kind of run around and play with.
How that will work. You've got some space. Yeah. So we'll have it hosted from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and then 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
And basically how that works is the parent or guardian brings their child down to the Child Watch Zone, signs their child in, and then goes and does their fitness class or their exercise in the strength and cardio room and then picks them up. Okay. All right.
So they got a place they can have them. Yes. How is it? Let's talk a little bit about memberships and things first. Better let people know about that because and then we'll get more into the details like we're opening on the first but we've got other things happening.
So let's talk memberships. How is this structured? I know that you've had a number of different people keep asking about it. So what are we looking at? Yeah. So we have memberships starting as low as $17 a month for what we're calling our social tier.
That gets you in in those slower morning hours if you want to walk laps and drink coffee kind of targeted towards that senior audience. We also have our core package which gets you in the door between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. So kind of your bulk daytime gym goers.
We won't kick you out but we do want you to be in the door by 6 o'clock. And then we also have a 24 hour tier that will get you in at any hour of the day to the amenities. You can also choose between an individual package or a family plan whatever works best for you.
We are working on announcing a couples package as well. So if you're just a two adult household we've heard that need and we'll be coming out with that here very soon and that I think will address another need that we've seen from our Facebook phones.
A lot of it will be flexible again subject to change or making some additions to it as you get going and get started. Okay you mentioned 24 so I'm any type of fitness background so available 24-7 I'm guessing some sort of a bob or something to be able to get in.
Yep so we'll either have NFC access through your phone or a physical key fob. Okay and through that app as well you can reserve your space in a group fitness class.
You can reserve your hour of child watch so you know that your child has a place if you're really dependent on that when you're coming into the gym.
So there's a lot that you can do through that gym master app that is integrated into our door access and other things throughout the facility. Okay so say someone wants to do spinning. Yep.
Okay first do we have instructors we've got all the facilities we've got the machines so are you looking for someone to run spin classes or do that or how's that work? Yeah I'd say we're looking to fill all the classes with instructors.
Right now I do have some individuals reaching out regarding spin and dance and all that but nothing solidified quite yet. Okay so we still have time to put it all together and it can even after the opening you can continue to build and offer different alternatives.
So being pretty literally flexible about how everything is really coming together and some of the opportunities that you have there.
So let's talk first you're going to have the opening and not really it's just going to be we're going to be open and ready to go but we have a little event the day before for people that want to get their memberships early and be a part of it.
Yep on the evening of March 31st we're hosting what we're calling a friends family and founding members event as well as sponsors contractors and those have helped us along this journey. Hope that you will come out and have some good food get a first look at the facility.
If you want to get that first peek sign up for your membership early. You won't be charged those membership fees until April 1st so not really any harm in signing up early come on out and give us a chance. On April 1st we'll be open for business and fully operational on that day.
We'll be doing a lot of tours probably have the popcorn machine popping and just hope that you come by take a look around see what we have to offer. So I'm sure that that first week might be a little bit chaotic but we're really ready for it.
You might have several weeks it might be a little bit I mean I'm pretty sure but no if people want to stop by I mean that's what one of the things that will happen once you're open they're going to want to come and see what's there do they make contact with you and because you're the Tyler's going to be the one around there.
Yeah yeah so they can either give us a call and see if we're pretty busy or just stop on in and we'll give you a tour. And then they can talk and ask questions they can about the memberships the options the alternatives that you have for people.
I'd also say we've got a mailer that should be hitting your mailbox pretty soon here if you live in the area that will also include a free day pass so if you want to come out and give us a try that's a great way to experience Moonflex as well just hang on to that flyer when it comes in your mail.
Okay plenty of things to do as far as the work will people be surprised when they come in because I mean it's not going to have that same I mean people keep going back to they remember the old Y and what it was not quite the same it is the same building but you've got some changes already.
Yeah I'd say foundationally it is quite a bit the same the room that was formerly physical therapy was the banquet hall of some sort before that we're returning that to event space you know the gymnasium and walking track are still the same we've repurposed the racquetball courts into a more modern use a lot of the changes are really in the locker room restroom changing facilities so that they're accessible and more functional for the way we use those types of spaces today but overall you know you walk in and it's light and it's bright and it's open and it's white and we're bringing in so many things that are shiny and it's just getting really fun this month these last few weeks seeing things start to come together in that way.
So are you going to go and try spinning? Sure. Well yeah I've done that. So now that we have a gym I should probably start going to one. So the one of the things people are going to know so what lines do we have on that basketball?
Oh boy we've got basketball volleyball and two pickleball courts. All right I figured that's a thing because that's I'm sure they were going pickleball. I mean planned and laid out so we can have indoor pickleball. Yeah yeah so looking forward to that.
Yeah no it's amazing watching that has probably been the most fun single project of this work watching them see on the floor at least back in the new floor you know manually tape out the stripes by hand for some reason I thought there'd be a fancier way that that happened and nope.
Some things you just have to do the old-fashioned way. You know it's shiny and the lights are bright and it's been a lot of fun. So again the track upstairs a little refurbishment on that as well that people walk on I know that's one. Yeah they like that.
The easiest way is to if they want to just come in and find out but if you're interested in getting that membership at least getting started then taking in the event on the 31st. Yeah if you want to have people do that.
If you want to go ahead and sign up early we'd love to have you you can visit our website boonflux.com and there's a big landing page right there that can help you choose your membership and take you to the page to purchase that.
Otherwise come on in April 1st or any time after we have staffed hours between 6 a.m and 6 p.m so that would be the best time to catch someone able to help you sign up. Catch Tyler at his desk during the daytime hours and give you a tour.
That's the thing too because the people and you will have people that will come in earlier in the morning and want to get doing some cardio work or things like that and maybe before they head off for work and or in the end so yeah that's why it's a 24-7.
You still have yeah there will be people in and out of there throughout the day and overnight I'm guessing.
Oh definitely yeah I mean people will be in when I'm sleeping for sure and we definitely want to accommodate those they're showing up at the end of the day or early morning by aligning our child watch schedule with our group class schedules for the time being.
That's why we call it flex. Yeah. Keeping our the whole thing flexible. All right so people are gonna wonder pool next obviously that's that's a major undertaking and I know Evan said said more than once see there's there's a lot of work that needs to be done for that.
Yeah the pool is just it's really a project in of itself between replumbing resurfacing and the HVAC needed to get that space properly operational.
It's an expensive project it's one that we look to reinvest revenue into into the future or as alternative funding may become available we can take a closer look at. As most businesses as you get the dollars you put them back in and that'll be one that you can focus on.
That'd be a whole another challenge you got a whole another thing listed things for that so and so everybody come on out to be a member and that'll help get you there for the whole thing too.
Yeah a lot of initial like you said initial classes or programs to get you started get people started and then just go grow from there and you know I'm guessing you anticipate a number of different things like we did our turkey trot sort of what do you call that again it was the flex given 5k.
Flex given. We were thrilled with that turnout I think we had 80 people on that super cold morning so a really great first year.
Hey I can remember over there ice to actually rather ball me so again it's whatever mother nature throws at you are you looking for different kinds of things and events like that that you're going to try to slip in as well yeah we've got you know with rag brine everything coming there's a lot of a lot of different things that people will look at.
Oh yes I expect to get a lot of community feedback of events that everyone's interested in and would love to implement them if they seem feasible. All right.
Tyler Holmes executive director for Moon Flex and again opening on the 1st of April but get your membership early and we have what's the whole thing called on the 31st? Friends family and founding members.
Friends family and founding members so find out all about what's going on at Moon Flex.
Emily Jorgensen Tyler Holmes thanks for joining us I appreciate you coming in getting us an update on what's going on and look forward to keeping up with all the activity that's going to be going on over there. Thank you for having us.
