
Gary W. Cook, 86, Madrid, Iowa
BOONE, Iowa—Gary W. Cook, age 86, of Madrid, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Accura Healthcare of Ogden.
Gary was born May 25, 1940, in Iowa City, the son of Everet W. and E. Lucille (Lungren) Cook. He attended school in Boone and graduated with the class of 1958 from Boone High School, where he was an accomplished trumpet player and vocalist. He then served in the US Navy until he was honorably discharged.
Gary was united in marriage to Georgianne Doyle on April 6, 1972, in Bethany, Missouri. They made their home in Boone and then for a short time in Hawaii and then Ames until the flood of 1993, when they purchased their current home near Madrid.
He owned and operated Cook’s Painting and Wallpapering business in Ames for a number of years. Gary then was employed in the maintenance department at the Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines until COVID, when he officially retired.
Gary enjoyed all types of animals, but most of all spending time with his family was very important and loved teaching different skills to the children in the family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everet and Lucille Cook; three brothers, Lee, Larry and Wally; and two sisters, Vivian and Shirley.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Georgianne Cook; daughter, Michele (David) Hockman; son, Jim Fields; grandson, Travis Fields; two sisters, Sharon (Mike) Sindlinger and Mary Fairbanks.
