Gary Weaklend

KWBG 07/22/25

BOONE, Iowa—Gary Floyd Weaklend, age 73, of Boone, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, with his family by his side.

Gary was born on April 2, 1952 in Osceola, Iowa. He spent his life rooted in the values of hard work, family and craftsmanship. He devoted 44 years of service to Iowa State University, where his dedication left a lasting impact on colleagues and the community alike.

What started out as a blind date turned into 52 years of marriage with Vickie (Quayle) Weaklend. Together, they raised three daughters: Cari, Kelli and Courtney. His legacy lives on through his six cherished grandchildren: Dylan and Brayden Engleen, Hunter Wood and Jacob, Devin and Elin Vessely, who brought immeasurable joy into his life.

Gary is survived by his wife, Vickie, daughters Cari (Brian) Engleen of Boone, Kelli (Chris) Wood of Elizabeth City, NC. and Courtney (Chris) Vessely of Ankeny; brother, Dennis Weaklend of West Des Moines and sister-in-law, Becky Weakland of Clear Lake, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Gladys Weaklend; his brother, Larry Weakland, sister, Irma Watkins and sister-in-law, Doris Weaklend.

He especially enjoyed being a grandpa and creating memories with his grandchildren.

One of Gary’s greatest passions was restoring his 1942 Dodge Power Wagon, a labor of love that he shared with his grandkids. He took pride in showcasing it at car shows and parades, turning heads and sparking conversations wherever he went.

Those who knew Gary will remember him for his unique sense of humor, strength, patience, integrity and determination to never give up. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. A life well lived is a life remembered with love.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, July 28, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made at the discretion of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Gary’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com
