Heggen advances to championships for Boone

Cadence Heggen of Boone upset No. 1 seed Halley Beaudet from Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday, February 7, to advance to the Class 2A 190-pound championship match at the girls’ state wrestling tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Cadence Heggen of Boone upset No. 1 seed Halley Beaudet from Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday, February 7, to advance to the Class 2A 190-pound championship match at the girls’ state wrestling tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville. 

Heggen, the No. 5 seed, will take on No. 2 seed Briar Ludeman of Ceder Falls this evening. 

On Thursday, Heggen pinned Reese Winslow of Pleasant Valley in the first round and beat Mallori Stutsman of Carlisle by decision, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. 

Malone places 7th at 105 pounds

Poppy Malone of Boone placed 7th at 105 pounds. 

No. 9 seed Malone beat Madison Stickrod of Spencer, 10-7, in the 7th place match on Friday. 

On Thursday, Malone beat Elizabeth Renshaw of Cedar Rapids Kennedy by decision, 3-0, before getting pinned by No. 1 seed Katie Biscoglia of Raccoon River Northwest. 

In the consolation rounds, Malone pinned Abby Doyle of Waverly-Shell Rock before getting pinned Lauren Watson of Ankeny. 

On Thursday, McKayla Silbaugh of Boone also wrestled and recorded her first win at state at 130 pounds. 

In the first round, Silbaugh was pinned by No. 1 seed Mackenzie Childers of Cedar Rapids Prairie. 

In the consolation round, she pinned Abby Kueffer of Hinton before getting pinned by Piper Lester of Clear Lake.
