HIRTA Announces Proposed Fare Increase to Address Rising Costs and Budget Deficit

KWBG 05/06/25

Urbandale, Iowa—The Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA) has announced a proposed fare increase from $2.50 to $3.00 for in-town trips and $5.00 to $6.00 for in-county trips, effective July 1, 2025, in response to rising operational costs and a projected budget deficit in the upcoming fiscal year.

“HIRTA remains committed to providing safe, accessible, and reliable transportation across our region,” said Julia Castillo, Executive Director of HIRTA. “However, escalating insurance premiums, vehicle maintenance costs, and other essential expenses have outpaced our current funding. This fare adjustment is necessary to help maintain service levels and continue meeting the mobility needs of our communities.”

The proposed fare increase will be open for public review and comment. In accordance with HIRTA’s Public Participation Process, members of the public are invited to provide feedback on the proposed fare increase. Interested persons are encouraged to attend the hearing and/or submit written comments. All feedback will be presented to the HIRTA Board of Directors for consideration prior to a final decision.

“We understand that any increase in cost can impact our riders, and this decision is not taken lightly,” Castillo added. “Our goal is to ensure long-term sustainability so we can continue serving the people who depend on us every day.”

Written comments must be submitted by Monday, June 16th and may be submitted by mail or email to:

2824 104th Street Urbandale, IA 50322 Email: info@ridehirta.com

Public Hearing:

A Public Hearing will be held where the HIRTA Board of Directors will consider the proposed fare increase and all public input received.

Date: June 26, 2025

Time: 9am
