Iowa in COVID-19 crosshairs

KWBG 10/18/20

According to an Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University, Iowa’s rate of new coronavirus cases as of Saturday put it eighth-highest among all 50 states.  Now on Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health identified 915 new cases of COVID-19, down significantly from the 1,595 positive coronavirus tests that were reported 24 hours before.  Just over 107,000 Iowans have contracted COVID-19 and 1,528 have died of coronavirus:  five on Saturday, including one from Polk County, and two in Sunday’s update.  Since 5:00 on Friday afternoon in central Iowa, 180 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Polk County for a total of 17,873; 42 this weekend in Dallas for 3,284; 34 in Story for 3,830; 15 in Webster for 1,661 there; six in Hamilton for 431; three in Greene for 171; and 11 in Boone County for 669 overall.  Statewide, there are 475 patients currently hospitalized for coronavirus, 14 more than Saturday, but well over 81,500 Iowans have recovered, 476 in Boone County alone.  For the one in four Iowans who have been tested for COVID-19, the infection rate is up to almost 12%.
