joining us on our senior spotlight on KWBG. Gonna talk to Boone senior Cam Lehmann about, oh, being a Torridor, we're gonna talk some sports, we're gonna talk some school, I don't know what else we're gonna talk about. Cam, I never know where these interviews are going to go, so I'm gonna let you lead me a little bit, but I wanted to start off with a conference across country because you had a chance to run that at North Polk and I've talked to Cass about this a million times, easily one of the best conferences when it comes to cross country. You had a personal bestseller at North Polk, you feel pretty good afterward? Yeah, you know, running at conference, it's always a good experience because you're running against some of the best teams in the state and so it's always a good chance to go out, you know, they're gonna be running quick, so just go out, try and run as quick as you can with them and obviously that came with a personal best for me as well as I think a few other people on the varsity team. So we're always gonna be happy about improving our times, even if the placing isn't what we wanted in a staffed Rackin' River conference. Cam, you have one of the easiest, when I say most difficult sports to be in. I can think of a couple other ones, but cross country, man, you're running time and I know we would love to be getting first as a team every single time and I totally get that, but that's difficult, isn't it Cam? You run this personal best time and you're thinking, man, I feel really good about myself and then you maybe look at your place and you're thinking, I wish I was a little bit higher. I know you've been doing this for a while, Cam, but is that tough? Yeah, it's definitely a little tough, especially because you're seeing so much improvement by yourself and from the team, but then you're still finishing last or not getting the team placing that you want. So it's definitely tough and it takes the toll on your mindset, but then that's also where you just need to look at the small improvements and also recognize those as wins and use that to keep going and trying to push to get better. Cam, I know you've been doing this for a while. How do the younger kids do with that? You gotta help out and remind them about that sometimes? Actually, the younger kids, I feel like do better than me with it because this is their first or second year, so they just can find more accomplishment in those small victories, whereas I've had those small victories time and time again, so it's harder for me to find the same amount of joy that they do with it. So Austin Felder, he'll come out up to me after the races and he'll just be all happy because he PR'd and I'm like, yeah, that's good. And so they definitely have an easier time with it than I do. Well, I tell you what, Cam, to number one, get a personal best. Number two, you're under 19 at the conference meet. I know it sounds like you were pretty happy with yourself. I think that's a heck of a time, buddy. Yeah, it's definitely good because my brother, when he ran Cross Country, he never got sub 19. So every time I can go sub 19, it's an even bigger victory because I'd beat his personal record again. You never rub that in though, do you, Cam? Oh, all the time, all the time. Was there a text message perhaps sent afterward? He actually makes it back to a lot of them because we go out to eat, so it's free food for him. So he'll come back and support. And so I got to talk to him actually after the meet and I'm like, be your time again. And he doesn't seem too upset about it. He actually, I think he likes that. It motivates me to go out and compete harder. Oh, that's cool, that's cool. Cam, tell me about school a little bit. I know my seniors are never super busy when it comes to that first or second semester because I always tell them they did a good job of taking a bunch of classes beforehand. So Cam, are you gonna keep my streak alive? Are you pretty busy with classes for a semester? I'm not busy at all. We do an even odd schedule. So there's days where I have a full schedule where I'm only taking like two real classes but I still have like lifting and then doing TV stuff to do. But then today, I have one class next hour and then I'm off the whole day. So that's pretty nice. So Cam, tell me about, with taking kind of a smaller schedule, I know the best part has to be, I can get my work done. I don't have to worry about that every other day. But what do you do during the day to keep yourself busy? I mean, lots of it is just going home, relaxing before practice. And then also, I seem to find myself on a golf course a lot of the time whenever I have time. So definitely just going out doing stuff I enjoy is a huge bonus to that open period. Yeah, we love that. We love that. All right, so what class, give me a class or even if you got two of them, Cam, what are you enjoying taking this first semester? It's gotta be a couple that aren't too bad to go to. Yeah, one of my favorites right now is doing TV. I've been doing that for the past four years. So this senior year just really taking it all and enjoying the last moments I'm gonna have doing that. And then also American government's been pretty fun this year. I'm learning a lot about just how that all works. So that one's been a good experience as well. Cam, tell me about future plans a little bit. Graduation coming up in May, diploma's in hand. I'm not gonna fast forward your senior year, but what are the future plans look like? What are you thinking about doing? Well, right now I'm planning on just going to Iowa State majoring in sports media and communication. Okay, what would be the prime job if you could have it someday? I know my brother works in the communications office right now, so while I'm in college, sort of working into that as well. And then dream job someday would probably be being the head of communications for the Iowa State men's basketball team. Oh, there we, so we got a specific one, huh? I love it, I love it. Gotta have a dream, gotta have a dream for sure. All right, Cam, you got sports, we got school. Let's take those out of there. When you don't have those kind of keeping you busy, what do you like to do in your free time? I'm definitely just hanging out with family and friends, trying to make time for all of that, and then just doing stuff I enjoy golfing, playing video games, just trying to keep myself happy all the time. I gotcha. Give me a couple other things you're looking forward to senior year, Cam. I know we're right in the middle of homecoming week we're actually toward the tail end of homecoming week. So that's almost in our rear view mirror, but what else do you look forward to or are you looking forward to your senior year? I'm really looking forward towards basketball season and getting back in the booth to commentate those for Boone TV. That's sort of always been my favorite time of the school year, because you got basketball and then you got wrestling and those are always two fun ones for me to get up there and commentate. And then after that, everything's sort of on the decline, you know, with sports, you just have tennis, golf, so not much to do for Boone TV for that. So after winter, everything's just on the decline. So I'm really looking forward to that winter season when everything picks up a little bit and then ramps back down. I gotcha, I gotcha. All right, Cam, we're gonna let you go with a piece of advice, because we always love to hear what the seniors would tell an incoming freshman. So Cam, hook me up, if I'm an incoming freshman, I come up to you and I say, hey, I wanna have a great four years at Boone High School. What do you think you might tell me to do? Well, I would say get involved as much as you can, as early as you can, and that's sort of where you'll find those connections and find what you're interested in doing in the years after high school. Obviously, take it all in, enjoy it. It goes by way quicker than you would imagine when you're a freshman, thinking you still have four years in front of you, but just enjoy it all, get involved, and have fun with it all. Cam, that is great advice. Thank you so much for some time. Thanks for joining us today. Yeah, thanks for having me. You bet. Cam Lehmann again joining us.
