Legendary Former Basketball Coach Bobby Knight to Speak at DMACC Fundraiser

BOONE, Iowa—Bobby Knight, the former head basketball coach at Indiana University and Texas Tech University, will be the featured speaker at a Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Athletics and Foundation fundraiser.

“A Knight with Bobby” event will begin with registration and a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m., Wed., Oct. 3 in the Boulders Inn & Suites, Fareway Conference Center, 1900 Lakewood Drive in Boone. The Bobby Knight presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a meet-and-greet to follow.

Knight’s 902 wins were the most ever by a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball Coach when he retired in 2008.  It is now the third highest total behind Mike Krzyewski of Duke and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse.

Knight’s teams have appeared in five Final Fours and resulted in three NCAA Championships (1976, 1981 and 1987).  His 1975-76 Indiana team was the last undefeated team throughout the regular season and remained undefeated by winning the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

Knight coached at Army from 1965-1971, at Indiana from 1971-2000 and at Texas Tech from 2000-2008.  He had a 902-371 record, won 11 Big Ten Conference Championships, was Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times, National Coach of the Year four times and coached the U.S. Olympic Team to a Gold Medal in 1984.

He was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.  Knight continues to cover men’s basketball games for ESPN.

Tickets for the “A Knight with Bobby” event cost $50 per person and $450 for a table of ten.  Please register online by Sept. 26 at www.DMACC.edu/Foundation/BobbyKnight.  Reservations are limited to the first 400 guests. The premier event sponsors are Rolfes at Boone, Fareway and Ogden Telephone Company. Proceeds from the event will support DMACC Athletics.
