Madrid High School’s football team faced a tough challenge Friday, September 26, as they hosted the undefeated Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center in a non-district showdown.
Despite a strong effort, Madrid fell 33-15, dropping their overall record to 3-2.
ACGC came out firing, putting up 14 points in the first quarter and adding 13 more before halftime to take a commanding 27-7 lead.
Madrid’s lone score in the first half came in the second quarter, followed by a third-quarter surge that narrowed the gap to 27-15.
However, ACGC sealed the win with a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Madrid’s offense was led by senior Chase Perkins, who made a big impact on the ground.
Perkins rushed 20 times for 150 yards and scored both of Madrid’s touchdowns.
He also went 2-for-7 passing for 6 yards.
Easton Halverson added 9 carries for 20 yards, while Will Atkinson contributed 17 yards on 8 carries.
Jevyn Severson had Madrid’s only reception, a 9-yard catch.
Defensively, Halverson also led the charge with 7.5 tackles, including 4 solo and 1 for loss.
Terrin Lawrenson and Severson each added 6 and 5.5 tackles respectively.
Brady Springer chipped in 5 tackles, and Kinnick Grimm recovered a fumble.
ACGC improved to 5-0 on the season.
Madrid, now 3-2 overall but still undefeated in district play (3-0), will look to bounce back in a crucial district matchup next Friday, October 3, against No. 10 Lynnville-Sully (4-1 overall, 3-1 district).
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lynnville-Sully Football Field.
