Madrid football opens season with victory

Madrid opened the 2026 football season in impressive fashion Friday, August 28, defeating Woodward-Granger 32-8 at Madrid High School to improve to 1-0 on the year.

Madrid opened the 2026 football season in impressive fashion Friday, August 28, defeating Woodward-Granger 32-8 at Madrid High School to improve to 1-0 on the year. 

Madrid’s ground game was led by Jevyn Severson, who rushed for 95 yards on just nine carries and scored three touchdowns.  

Quarterback Chase Perkins also carried the ball 17 times for 53 yards and a touchdown.  

Perkins also completed 3 of 5 passes for 50 yards. 

Will Atkinson rushed 14 times for 88 yards and a touchdown as Madrid piled up more than 260 rushing yards in the victory. 

Kinnick Grimm contributed 25 yards on seven carries. 

In the passing game, Max Fowler hauled in two receptions for 40 yards, while Emerson Bridgewater added one catch for 10 yards. 

Atkinson led the Tiger defense with eight total tackles, including a tackle for loss and a quarterback sack.  

Severson added four tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack of his own, while Logan Bogardus recorded 4.5 tackles and a half tackle for loss. 

Fowler provided an interception. 

The season-opening victory gives Madrid a 1-0 record, while Woodward-Granger dropped to 0-1. 

The Tigers will travel to North Mahaska for a non-district contest on Friday, Sept. 4.  

North Mahaska enters the matchup with an 0-1 record after falling in its season opener.
