
The Madrid Tigers boys’ basketball team is one step away from the Class 1A state tournament after securing a 52–48 victory over Martensdale‑St. Mary’s Tuesday, February 24, at Madrid High School.
Martensdale‑St. Mary’s jumped out quickly, taking a 16–13 lead after the first quarter.
Madrid fought back in the second quarter, and by halftime, the Tigers had pulled even at 29–29.
Madrid outscored Martensdale‑St. Mary’s 13–7 in the third quarter to take a 42–36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
From there, Madrid held on to seal the win.
Jevyn Severson finished with 19 points (8‑of‑11 FG, 3‑of‑3 FT), 10 rebounds (3 offensive) and 2 steals.
Logan Bogardus added 14 points, including 2‑of‑5 from three‑point range and a perfect 4‑for‑4 at the free‑throw line.
Max Fowler posted 8 points and led the team with 5 assists, committing just one turnover.
Emerson Bridgewater scored 7 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and added 4 assists and a block.
Kolbie Owens chipped in 4 points along with 1 rebound and 1 assist.
Zach Newell added 5 rebounds and 1 block.
Madrid moved to 20–4 overall, while the Blue Devils finish their season at 18–7.
With the victory, Madrid advances to face Woodbine (16–8) in a Class 1A substate final at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, February 28, at Drake University Knapp Center in Des Moines.
The winner will clinch a berth in the state tournament.
