The Madrid softball team kicked off its postseason run defeating North Tama 4–1 in the opening round of the Class 1A, Region 8 tournament Monday, July 7, at home.
After a scoreless start, Madrid broke through with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth and added 2 more in the sixth to take control.
North Tama managed a single run in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Madrid.
Samantha Springer led the Tigers at the plate with a 4-hit night, including a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
Rylee Borcherding drove in 2 runs, while Tilly Sweet, Mayzie Surratt, Olivia Ostert, and Hadley Mickle all contributed key hits and runs.
In the circle, Mayzie Surratt struck out 9 in a complete game victory.
With the win, Madrid improves to 9–20 overall, while North Tama ends its season at 5–14.
Madrid advances to face Mason City Newman Catholic (21–5) in the regional quarterfinals on Wednesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. at Newman Catholic High School.
