The Madrid softball team used a seventh-inning surge to defeat Ogden, 5-3, in a tightly contested West Central Conference softball game Monday, June 9, at Ogden High School.

The game opened with both teams trading runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the evening.

Madrid struck first with a run in the top of the first, but Ogden quickly answered in the bottom half to tie it 1-1.

The score remained deadlocked until the sixth, when Ogden edged ahead 2-1.

But Madrid wasn’t done.

In the top of the seventh, the Tigers scored four runs, turning the tide and taking a 5-2 lead.

Ogden mounted a final push in the bottom of the seventh, scoring once more, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Madrid.

For Madrid, Samantha Springer had a hit and two RBIs, while Ashlyn Burkhart added an RBI single.

Mayzie Surratt had a hit and scored a run and was dominant in the circle for Madrid, pitching a complete game and striking out eight to earn the win.

Madrid’s balanced offensive effort included hits from Rylee Borcherding, Tilly Sweet, Hailey Renslow and Hadley Mickle.

For Ogden, Harleigh Janssen led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Breaunna Wenger added a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.

Aubrey Leonard and Sophie Moorman each had a hit and scored a run.

Katie Wilcoxson pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, striking out seven in the loss.
