Madrid volleyball beats Des Moines East

The Madrid Tigers volleyball team hosted their annual Madrid Invitational on Saturday, October 4, and picked up a hard-fought win against Des Moines East, defeating the Scarlets 2-1.

The Madrid Tigers volleyball team hosted their annual Madrid Invitational on Saturday, October 4, and picked up a hard-fought win against Des Moines East, defeating the Scarlets 2-1.  

The Tigers were, led by Rylin Velky with 10 assists, and Caia Byriel and Lauren Dvorak combining for 11 kills.  

Jaela Hansen and Iyla Fine added 3 kills each, while Byriel and Hansen each recorded a block.  

On defense, Stevie Schaffer had 9 digs, and Fine added 6.  

Fine, Hadley Mickle, and Savannah Bradley each served an ace and maintained a perfect serving percentage. 

Despite the win, Madrid faced a tough slate of opponents in the tournament, falling 0-2 in matches against Earlham, Panorama, Webster City, Ogden, and Ankeny Christian. 

The Tigers continued their season on Tuesday, October 7, traveling to Pleasantville for a West Central Conference matchup.  

Madrid fell 0-3, but Fine led the offense with 4 kills, while Velky added 5 assists.  

Fine and Paige Richards each had 5 digs, and Byriel contributed 2 ace serves. 

On Thursday, October 9, Madrid competed in a triangular at Van Meter against two more conference foes.  

The Tigers dropped the first match 0-2 to Van Meter, with Velky tallying 2 assists, Fine recording 2 kills, and Dvorak adding 2 blocks.  

Bradley led the defense with 4 digs, and Byriel served 2 aces. 

Madrid showed fight in their second match of the night against West Central Valley, taking a set but ultimately falling 1-2.  

Fine had a standout performance with 11 assists and 13 digs, while Samantha Springer led the attack with 5 kills.  

Dvorak added 4 blocks, and Byriel and Richards each served 2 aces. 

Madrid now sits at 4-22 overall and 0-5 in West Central Conference play. 

The Tigers return to action this afternoon at 4:30 p.m., facing Ogden (15-12 overall, 2-3 conference) at Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale in the West Central Activities Conference Tournament.
